Hello, Thank you all for your nices messages. Did you see the article on saphirnews ? It's strange.... Have a great day... Christiane Here is the article translated The British singer Yusuf Islam, has the intention to go to the United States in December to record a new album. One of the new pieces will be devoted to his expulsion of the United States, three years ago. The converted artist to the Islam in 1978, see itself to forbid in September 2004 the entry on the American ground "for reasons of security". The airplane in which it traveled in company of his girl then was disconcerted towards an airport of the Maine, where both of them were constrained to land. Apparently washed of all suspicions, Islam, 59 years old, was able to return two years later to the United States for the promotion of" Another Cup", the album of his return, after 28 years of absence. It works today to a new opus of which an entitled piece "Jodhpurs and Sand" (I think they mean - Boots and Sand) will be devoted to what it names his "small excursion". The recording is foreseen next month to Nashville. "I hope to go over there to curl this buckle in December", it entrusted. Several faces of the musqiue country, of which Dolly Parton, will contribute probably to the album. Saturday October 20 2007

Thanks for the above translation! I believe I understood most of it, except for the following: "I hope to go over there to curl this buckle in December", it entrusted. ?? Is that a "Britishism" I'm unfamiliar with? Thank you for the article and the translation, Christiane and Sue! Here's basically the same article in English: Folk artist Yusuf Islam to sing about deportation.BTW, "I hope to go over there to curl this buckle in December, it entrusted."was originally "I'm planning hopefully to drop in there and finally close that circle (in) December," Islam told Reuters. So, with a little switching around, we get buckle this curl = close that circle which actually makes sense in a funny kind of way! This expression could actually catch on! LOL! It's like that game called "Telephone." Who would have ever known! ~Sun~

Choosing Names for the Hall of FameBallots are out to the voting membership of the Songwriters Hall of Fame to choose the class of 2008. SHOF voters will have their work cut out for them. Nominees in the performer songwriter category include Elvis Costello, Peter Gabriel and David Gates, along with such teams as Robert Lamm/James Pankow (of Chicago fame), and John Densmore/ Robby Krieger/Ray Manzarek/ Jim Morrison (the Doors). Tom Petty and John Sebastian are in the running along with Yusuf Islam (formerly Cat Stevens), the Jon Bon Jovi/Richie Sambora team and Steve Winwood. Voters must also choose inductees from the non-performer category, containing some of the most respected and successful songwriters of our times. They include Desmond Child (“Livin’ La Vida Loca”), Chip Taylor (“Wild Thing”), Mark James (“Suspicious Minds”), and the teams of Tommy Boyce/Bobby Hart (“Come A Little Bit Closer”) and Roger Cook/ Roger Greenaway (“Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress”) who add their substantial catalogs to the ring. To get a sampling of each nominee’s catalog and find out more about the Songwriters Hall of Fame, log on to the site at www.songhall.org.

The main part of this article said: The singer Yusuf Islam (formerly known as Cat Stevens) has rejected an invitation to appear at an Islamic music festival in Oran, Algeria, explaining that he feared threats by Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.Have there been threats in the past? It never occurred to me that Yusuf might be threatened by these extremists, but I guess it almost makes sense--after all, he's anti-terror and a moderate, not to mention he's on good terms with many westerners & non-Muslims. I find this most disturbing, and am now re-thinking my desire for him to tour. I don't even want to think about what could happen. Dark thoughts for a bleak & cloudy day. joni...

I wouldn't let it get you down, joni: www.thememriblog.org/blog_personal/en/6334.htmRepresentative Of Yusuf Islam Asks Algerian Paper To Remove “Entirely False” Story On SingerThe following letter refers to a story that appeared in the March 12, 2008 edition of the Algerian daily El-Shorouq El-Yawmi, and was posted the next day on the MEMRI Blog, titled "Singer Yusuf Islam Won’t Participate In Algeria Islamic Music Festival For Fear Of Al-Qaeda." Dear Sirs, I am writing in reference to this story regarding Yusuf Islam: www.echoroukonline.com/ara/din_wa_donia/1080.htmlThis has also been reproduced here: www.thememriblog.org/blog_personal/en/6161.htmPlease note that this story is entirely false - Yusuf Islam has never planned to participate in any concert in Algeria, nor has he ever been invited to any such event. He has also not made the comments that are attributed to him in this article. The fact that the article has been picked up and posted on the blog at memri.org further increases it's visibility on the Internet. Therefore please ensure that the false article is removed from your website, so that MEMRI may also note on their blog website that the story has been acknowledged as fabricated, and they may then take steps to remove it. Thank you for your help, With Regards, Umair Ahsan -Joanne

WOO HOO!!! Now we know where he was on 5th April... Link to Rock Masters Cat Stevens Drops InRockMasters was priviledged to have the support of Yusuf Islam (formerly Cat Stevens) at this years' British and International Franchise Exhibition at Olympia on Saturday 5 April. Yusuf was invited by friend and former producer Mike Hurst, now director of company Rock Masters, who ‘discovered’ Cat Stevens more than 30 years ago. Could this mean that the new musical is nearly underway or is it wishful thinking. Guess we'll just have to wait and see

Hi everyone. I am translating "Behind the music" and I am almost ready but there are some places in the movie where I cant get the words and need some help. Here is the link to the movie video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6157965900354777626&q=yusuf+islam+movie&total=974&start=10&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=1The first sentence I cant get is in the 1 minute and 5 second right there where Chris Blackwell is speaking. "This is a guy...." The second place is the interview with the young Cat in 15:52 till 16:22. I cant get the sense there. The next is 24:23. This is all. I ll be very grateful if you can help me. Peace, Hatidje

Hatidje:
At the 1 min 5 second point, the quote is:
"This is a guy who could sell out Madison Square Garden 2 nights in a row without a record out."
FYI, Madison Square Garden is a huge, prestigious venue in New York City. All the biggest & best acts perform there, and only the biggest & best of those can sell out multiple shows... without having a new record released, no less.
I'll see if I can get the rest for you, too.

Hatidje, in the second spot [15:52 - 16:22], the sense I get is that Cat is trying not to appear too pretentious or "la-di-da". I realize that isn't too clear, so will try to explain. He says that he philosophies [philosophizes?] a bit in his songs, but he's not very good at it ["I say nothing of importance, really"]; but it's fun. Then he laughs and ducks his head, in a very self-deprecating gesture. The interviewer asks isn't he a bit more serious than that, & Cat looks him in the eye and says yes he is. I get the feeling he is trying to convey his seriousness without appearing too hung up on his own importance or giving his fans the notion that he is so far above their heads, they won't be able to understand him. He strikes me as almost embarrassed to reveal he has deeper ideas than just your basic pop-song young cute-boy image that had been created for him at this point in his career. Clearly, he wanted more than just your basic 2 or 3 hits in a couple of years career that his management thought they could "wring" out of him. I hope that's clear, Hatidje. Let me know if I've baffled you & I'll try to translate myself. I hope others have some input here, because I may be inserting my own notions onto what he's trying to say. I don't quite understand what it is you are asking about on the 3rd spot, the 24:23. That's producer Paul Samwell-Smith remarking that Tillerman took about 7 months to record, which he felt was about right since he'd heard Simon & Garfunkel had spent about 800 hours recording Bridge Over Troubled Water. I guess maybe he thought Mona Bone hadn't taken long enough to record, although I didn't hear any mention of how long that took. As if, the longer an album takes to record, the better the outcome. I hope others input on this one, too! joni...
