UK: Magazine Apologizes to Yusuf Islam for False Report On 26th March 2007 we published an article headlined "YUSUF ISLAM IGNORES BARE-HEADED WOMEN" which had been circulated to us by World Entertainment News Network.
The article suggested, entirely falsely, that the singer Yusuf Islam (formerly known as Cat Stevens) was so sexist and bigoted that he refused at an awards ceremony to talk to women who weren't wearing veils. The article went on, again falsely, to quote Mr Islam's manager as stating that Mr Islam would not speak with any women except his wife. We now accept that these allegations (which were originally reported in B.Z, a German publication) are entirely without foundation, and that Mr Islam has never had any difficulties working with women, whether religious or for any other reason. On the contrary, women feature among some of the most influential people in his core team.
We are happy to set the record straight, and wish to apologise unreservedly to Mr Islam for the distress caused by our article. Substantial compensation has been made to a charity of Mr Islam’s choice in recompense for this matter.
It's taken them long enough!!!

Dunedin stop for 'Peace Train' singer? By Allison Rudd on Wed, 16 Jul 2008 Your Town: Dunedin OTAGO DAILY NEWS Yusuf Islam, the peace activist and singer formerly known as Cat Stevens, may come to Dunedin to give the Dunedin Abrahamic Interfaith Group's 2009 Peace Lecture. Progress was being made on confirming a visit, after emailing him for four years, group chairman the Rev Greg Hughson said yesterday. While in Britain on study leave recently, Mr Hughson met Islam's public relations manager and delivered a formal invitation signed by Dunedin Mayor Peter Chin. "The response was he was keen to come, providing he could fit it into his busy schedule." A decision was expected by November. "We are hoping he can come. It would be great for Dunedin and for New Zealand," Mr Hughson said. The interfaith group was formed after the 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States, with the aim of promoting respect and understanding between followers of Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Peace lectures have been held annually since 2004 and have featured speakers including former New Zealand prime minister the late David Lange and Australian Muslim academic Prof Abdullah Saeed. The 2008 lecture will be given next month by Christchurch anti-nuclear activist Dr Kate Dewes, who in January was appointed New Zealand's only representative to the United Nations Advisory Board on Disarmament. Yusuf, Building More Bridges?Love Bus to take passengers across divided CyprusBus driver hopes project will help relations between the two sides ahead of long-awaited reunification talks next monthHelena Smith in Athens guardian.co.uk, Thursday August 21 2008 19:19 Can Cat Stevens, the Muslim former pop star, and a "Love Bus" help reunite war-divided Cyprus? Greek and Turkish Cypriots, emboldened by the changing political climate on the island, think so. In a novel step both Stevens and the Love Bus are being seconded to help heal the wounds that have kept the communities entrenched behind sandbags and barbed wire for the past 34 years. Tomorrow, for the first time since Turkish troops invaded Cyprus following a coup aimed at uniting it with Greece, a bus emblazoned with red hearts and driven by a "peace-loving" Greek Cypriot will embark on an historic journey from the island's internationally recognised southern sector to its breakaway north. Leontios Christou, the man behind the wheel, hopes that when the Love Bus crosses the island's UN-patrolled dead zone it will help inject a much-needed dose of trust between the two sides ahead of long-awaited reunification talks next month. "The aim of the Love Bus is to bring our communities closer," said Christou, a professional bus driver who first conceived of the idea fifteen years ago. "Back then the authorities were very negative and told me that until the Cyprus problem was solved no bus could cross the dead zone. But now I am very optimistic because things have changed. People are realising how absurd it is that our little island is still divided when countries like Vietnam have been reunited." For a fee of 35 euro, the Love Bus daily will transport locals and tourists from major cities in the south including Nicosia the capital, to historic sites in the Turkish-controlled north. "On both sides there are people who have not seen parts of their country for a very long time, if at all. Our hope is that eventually Love Buses will also journey from north to south," he told the Guardian. "Even if there is just one passenger on board, the Love bus will operate." With moderate leaders heading both communities, the prospect for peace on Cyprus has never looked as good. The new climate has spurred an internet campaign by a group of London-based Cypriots to woo the music star turned activist Yusuf Islam (aka Cat Stevens) to also perform for Cyprus with a "peace concert" in the dead zone. Many believe the singer – the son of a Cypriot who was born Steven Georgiou – embodies the tolerance and empathy needed to put the island back together again.

This is part of an interview to an Italian photographer Pizzicannella, pretty famous I think, that was published in February this year. He took some shots of Yusuf. Here is what he says about him in this article: Cat Stevens: “After his conversion to Islam he changed his name and he has been dealing with completely different stuff since then, until the time when a record company wanted to publish a “Best of…” and they convinced him to pose for a few shots. He hadn’t had any official picture taken in years. So, in 1998, we met in a studio to take a few pictures. I once went to Morocco, in a small village lost in the desert and there I heard locals talking about Cat Stevens. I told him about that and then he started to “feel at ease” and told me that he had visited those areas, then he started telling me about his conversion, about his tour back in the 60s with Bob Marley and how magical those years were…” Hope you enjoyed it! PS. Sorry if I don’t post in here much, but I do read about you regularly! img291.imageshack.us/my.php?image=c0articolo399740listatamb7.jpg

I was in Joanne, etc (fabric and craft store) today and suddenly heard a familiar voice coming over the sound system. It was Yusuf singing "Maybe There's a World"!! I was really suprised. I've heard Cat songs in stores before, but never a Yusuf song so I was very happy to hear that Yusuf is getting some airplay even if it is in a store and not on the radio.

Novel Abraham Centre Wins Approval <--- LINKLONDON, September 12 /PRNewswire/ -- There was jubilation from officials representing Dr Yusuf Islam (formerly Cat Stevens) at a meeting of the Brent Planning Committee this week, where the local Council unanimously approved new plans for an GBP8m cultural centre - The Maqam - in Brondesbury Park, London. The new Maqam Centre, which takes its name from the 'Station of Abraham' in Makkah, will be a dynamic cultural and exhibition space where professionals, scholars and artists from around the world can meet and interact. The Centre will also accommodate exhibitions and educational resources, as well as a cafe open to the public. Dr Islam said: "I am delighted that the Council has given the green light to our plans. For many years now I have tried to build bridges between faiths and communities and promote a better understanding of Islam. This modern, interactive centre, focused on the monotheistic example of Prophet Abraham - known in Judaism, Christianity and Islam as the Father of the Prophets - will provide a focal point for our activities in trying to bring people together and spreading the message of peace and common understanding." The structure and inner foundations have already been constructed and a new fund raising campaign has been initiated to complete the building work. The Centre is expected to open in 2010. For more information, visit www.themaqam.com Press enquiries to: Press Office, press@yusufislam.com, +44-207-372-2171 Distributed by PR Newswire on behalf of Small Kindness. What a shame. Some things will never change or be forgotten. It seems they are not welcoming peace. For some reason, the situation as it is, suits their purpose. What a lost cause. No hope in sight.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Translated from Arabic from London newspaper 'Quds Al-Arabi':
Israel refused to allow British Muslim singer Yusuf Islam, to participate in a singing call for peace, it was decided that Israel invites him to participate in the commemoration of the tenth anniversary of the founding of the Institute for Peace, created by the current Israeli President Shimon Peres, to promote peace between Arabs and Jews.
But the center said that the singer who became famous in the world calling for peace known as the peace train, he stressed that Yusuf Islam, will not participate after the re-consider the invitation extended to him. Islam was and was brought back from Ben Gurion Airport when he was on his way to participate in an Islamic ceremony eight years ago. Center did not elaborate any information about a rejection, but the newspaper (Yediot Aharonot) said that Islam was keen to visit and asked to add new words he sang the famous peace with the international singer Dolly Parton, to support the peace between the Palestinians and Israelis.
The newspaper quoted the Director of the Center Uri Savir, saying 'that the idea to invite Stevens to Israel led to much controversy after he announced, we have to send passport number for security screening, and we take it into account and decided to cancel the call', will not be Cat Stevens (this name before Islam ) to Israel at this time.
The singer and director of the Muslim schools 'has criticized terrorist acts committed in the name of Islam and denounce the September 11th in the United States and detention of civilians by Chechen militants in Beslan in 2004 and Israel has blamed on Islam, who converted to Islam in 1977, accusing him of supporting charities said It is sympathetic to Hamas.
