Cat had a habit of using the same song to open his concerts. For example during the 70/71 Moonshadow was the preferred song used to open the majority of concerts. Anyone have an opinion as to what would be the quintessential track to be used to open a concert if say Yusuf decided to return and sing a one off concert performing his Cat period material?

Fun question Bootmeister!! I'll go for it.
Well, it seems something sort of mid-tempo would be the way to go. Don't want to waste energy on a real up-tempo number when the audience isn't warmed up yet. Then again something too quiet might not draw them in. It also works when it's something recognizable to the majority of people in the audience. Hmmm...the best I can come up with is "Music" from the Buddha album. It's probably not real recognizable but the energy level is right. Of course, this would only work for a Cat Stevens-style concert, as in the old days.
For a quieter serene one-off performance more be-fitting of Yusuf today, I would say Portabello Road or Into White. It would be interesting to see how he would interpret one of these songs today.

Ooooh, just had an after thought. Then I had an after thought on my after thought. Haha!!
I was going to come back and say, scratch 'Into White' and 'Portabello Road'...'The Wind' would be the perfect choice. It reflects who Yusuf is today; he's even re-recorded it...it's fairly well-known too. But something about that song lingers...it's hard to move away from it. It really stands alone...always did. It might work better as an intimate moment later on.
O.K...enough daydreaming from me.
What does everyone else think?

Cat opened the American section of the Majikat concert with the Wind, and it was the perfect opening song. Just Cat and Alun up on stage while they sang the first 3 songs. During the middle of the 3rd song, the curtain behind them opened to reveal Jean Russel and the rest of the band. It was pretty impressive.
OK for my suggested song for this current 2002 tour. I would place my vote with Time/Fill My Eye, there is no rhyme or reason as to why this particular song. Just because it is a soft beautiful song, and to me it almost seems fitting......

I think you've hit on the perfect opening song, Christine. I think it would be an appropriate song for Yusuf as there is something about that song - some connection with the lyrics and his acceptance of Islam, for me anyway. I would love to hear him sing it now. ...kim

Yes...Time/Fill My Eyes would work nicely I think. The "Time" portion of it even has a little sense of drama to it ... an element to catch people's interest.
Wow Christine, I went to a majicat concert but didn't remember The Wind being the openning song. What were the other two? Yes, I kind of remember something like a curtain being raised at one point. I have memories of some of the songs he did that night but not the order they were done in.

Jen, I had a little help remembering the concert. I clipped two concert reviews from local newpsapers of the concert I attended in Cleveland. Here they are. www.majicat.com/articles/cleveland76reviews.htm I would have never been able to remember the line up of the songs to the concert with out the clippings. It was a life time ago.

I think "On The Road To Find Out" and ending the show with "God Is The Light" would be a very loud statement signifying the seach he was on and his finding the answers.

Sorry Aisha, but "God is the light" would not be allowed. It is Yusuf performing his Cat period material. Personally I think "How can I tell you would" would be a nice solemn opening, followed by some faster tracks then finished with "The Wind". I am sure Yusuf could still do some of his early tracks justice, e.g. Portobello Rd., I love my dog, Hummingbird, Lady, etc.... Does anyone think Yusuf would appear out of place singing "Banapple Gas"? ;D

Okay, then "Into White" would be an excellent closing number. It is so mystical and calming, something that would make for calming people down.

I think the perfect opening song would be "Morning Has Broken". To me it just seems fitting. Caritas You know, I think you are right. I have never thought about "MHB" as an opener, but I can just see it in my head, the stage lights are coming up and there is that wonderful piano intro and then there is CAT... EXCELLENT!!! And I think it would be an equally great ending song - somehow that would seem to be appropriate if this mythical (and oh how I wish it were real) concert were tracing his musical and life path. "Morning Has Broken" could represent the dawning of his journey as a Muslim.

Let's see! Somehow I can see MORNING HAS BROKEN, because it would appear to be a brand new day, so that would be the opening song! Followed by ON THE ROAD TO FIND OUT, because we would be following Cat/Yusuf on his journey to discovery! To end the show, I would go with CHILD FOR A DAY! HECK, it was the PERFECT ending for his final concert!
Now as far as Yusuf singing BANAPPLE GAS, I can just picture Yusuf trying to keep a straight face as he sings this! Of course, I THINK we can forget about MONA BONE JAKON! HMMM! I wonder why!! It's ONLY A BRAIN---LOL!!
Peace,Vivian
