The subject heading says it all! Whilst on the subject of Foreigner, why hasn't the Quad version of Foreigner been released on CD yet?

BOOTMIESTER, I MOST CERTAINLY AGREE! FOREIGNER IS A TRUE MASTERPIECE AND DESERVES CREDIT AS SUCH! But, if you don't mind my asking, WHAT IS THE QUAD VERSION OF FOREIGNER?? And how does it differ from the original or live versions! Peace,Vivian hippie

The Quad version was only availiable on LP. Quite a few of Cat's LP were availiable as Quad releases, however unlike the other Quads the Foreigner Quad contained slightly different mixes. Personally, I prefer the Quad. Look out for the Quad mix on Ebay, they do appear from time to time and can be very reasonably priced.

May I chip in on this one? The Quad Foreigner is an interesting anomoly! Totally agree, its Stereo counterpart never did get the credit it deserved in spite of huge sales. It was a brave move at the time, a major departure and both sides of the platter complement each other very well. I love the suite itself and 100 I Dream - not only did Cat go funky, he went country too! Interesting to hear those subtle variations on the Quad issue, I wonder how that came about - it does seem a much different tape to the one used on the usual release? Tell me more, anyone who can shed some light on this!? Vivian, during the early '70's I believe, they developed a four speaker alternative to Stereophonic called Quadrophonic. Forgive me if you know all this, but you must be too young It was like an early version of today's surround sound. It caught on for about 20 minutes and joins betamax video tapes and eight track cartridges in the book of patented failures! One consolation is that it did throw up some interesting vinyl for collectors. I remember hearing Dark Side Of The Moon by Pink Floyd on my friend's Quad system and it was quite a cosmic experience. Yes, definitely time to campaign for the reissue of Quad Foreigner and any other anomalies! Foreigner - four ears, one vision!

Thanks George!, I might have been too young, I don't know! I was 12 years old in 1972 when I first found Cat!
Peace,Vivian

I own a copy of the Buddah Quad LP, unfortunately the Buddha version is exactly the same as the original LP. I have also listened to the Quad Foreigner, and it is quite different than the original. I have always wondered why the Foreigner LP is the only Quad they changed the mixing on and why they even change it in the first place. I quess this is a question for Paul Samwell-Smith to answer.
Correct me if I am wrong, but weren't quad stereos made so each speaker played a differnt function from the LP? So when you were standing in the center of the room, the drums, - guitars, Bass ect, all came at you from four different directions? But of course you would only hear this if you had Quad LP being played on a Quad Stereo system. I remember listening the Who's " Quadrophenia" LP on my brother Quad system years ago, and it about blew my mind, what a completely different sound it was.

Peace,Vivian They are very Distinct. You can't mistake a quad for a regular LP. The LP cover has QUADRAPHONIC written on all four sides on both front and back of the LP sleeve. Plus my Buddha has an gold sticker on it which reads "This record had been SQ ENCODED". Also on the Record label, it has QUADRAPHONIC written on all four sides, on both the A & B side of the disc.

As I started the talk of Quads, I thought I would impart some trivia. The very first Tarkyl bootleg Quad release was Tarkyl 1904 the legendary "Hoaxers Midightnight Daydream". It appears everyone was jumping on the Quadrophonic equalisation method. The original Quad LP's do not achieve the desired effect on todays equipment. I have tried all my Quad LP's on a dedicated 4 speaker system, yet failed to notice a difference. Still very strange how Foreigner Quad differs from the original? We must ask PSS. Almost forgot, it wasn't just Quad LP's but Quad 8 tracks. Here is an example on Ebay now: cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=852759578

I remember listening the Who's " Quadrophenia" LP on my brother Quad system years ago, and it about blew my mind, what a completely different sound it was. Ahhhhh, the '70's... "Quadrophenia" was a great album, especially when heard in quadrophonic sound. Thanks for that sweet memory, Christine! (And welcome back from vacation!)
