My treasured Majicat colleagues, This Thursday, July 3rd, marks the birthday of our fellow Majicatter and Yusuf fan, extraordinaire (and talented musician in her own right), Tiffany. Please join me in wishing Tiff a very "Happy Birthday". I have never known a music fan who is more enthusiastic and knowledgeable than is Tiffany, who I often refer to as a "Walking, Talking Encyclopedia of Music". "Happy Birthday", Tiff, with all happy returns! -Bud

Now, what do you all think about Cat covering other artists' work on his new album? He always felt uncomfortable singing other people' songs so he rote his own, which were gems! I have mixed feelings. I loved Another Saturday night and I trust Cat to do justice to the songs he covers by putting his own interpretation on them. John Lennon loved people covering his songs as long as the interpretation was different. Otherwise, he opined, what was the point? It was just re recording one thing already done! Cat Stevens' songs were always original and brilliant, in my humble opinion. I just want to hear more self-penned work. Any thoughts, Majicatters? My thoughts are YOUR thoughts I am wondering, Chris and Monika: Does this indicate that _all_ of the tunes on Yusuf's upcoming recording will be covers?, or are some new, original songs going to be included, as well. Thank you! -Bud

Three sightings in two days! Maybe someone's trying to tell me something... First, in yesterday's newspaper (see below), an article on "Le Studio's" owner André Perry getting an honorary degree from Laval University in Quebec City. The article came with pictures of individual artists and bands who recorded at the famous residential studio in Morin Heights, including our Cat. More on André Perry and "Le Studio": majicat.proboards.com/thread/1622/andr-perry-remembersAlso in yesterday's paper, a Quebec artist citing Cat Stevens as a major influence. And thirdly, woke up this morning to a version of "Sad Lisa" by Canadian violinist Roxane de Lafontaine, playing on the clock radio. Great stuff, Charles... Grand memories... Thank you! I well remember the excellent and finely-detailed article that you posted here on Majicat about Andre Perry and his legendary "Le Studio" in Morin Heights. What a magical/majical/musical place that was! -Bud

Many thanks to you (our excellent moderators) Chris and Charles, for highlighting Chris Charlesworth's classic biography of Cat Stevens and for informing us of Mr. Charlesworth's current, fascinating blog. I, too, was fortunate enough to be able to acquire a copy of the bio-book via an ad that appeared in the back of an issue of "Rolling Stone" magazine (I believe the year was 1987, and I mail ordered to Canada for my copy). That book has remained much treasured for low, these many years. -Bud

Bud - I watched it "live" back in 1973 as well and I remember Cat's reaction as well. From what I recall Dr. John had on an elaborate "New Orleans" type costume and I liked Cat's reaction to it. It was similar to this one: seventiesmusic.files.wordpress.com/2013/01/drjohn-4.jpgHi Trots, Yes, you are right on the mark (and thank you so much for locating the photo of Dr. John in full regalia and in all his colorful glory!). It's funny how certain little moments and images stay with you and so, yes, if I close my eyes, I can yet see "The Cat", from the stage wing and with lit cigarette in hand, smiling broadly (nearly chuckling, actually) as he watched Dr. John perform as only Dr. J can. Many thanks for sharing your remembrance (and for confirming mine!). -Bud

I clearly recall (on that late Friday night in November of '73) recording the concert via the radio simulcast, and I have managed to hold onto the 40+ year-old cassette tape through these many years and many life's changes. A vivid visual memory of the program is of a bemused Cat (cigarette in hand) watching Dr. John's performance from a stage wing. Still wishing that this classic would be commercially released (a wish we have all held for, yes, these past 40+ years!). -Bud

Hi everybody, I just realized yesterday was my 6th Anniversary as a Majicat member, registered, 1st of MAY 2008,1:41am. Thankyou to ALL present and non present for your company over the years, for making this a very special place, a place I called a home away from home, my secret garden, the posts, the threads, priceless, and all the good times I have shared with you over the six years. To celebrate I started reading my personal messages. I am so glad that these were not lost when the new Majicat was developed. These are my treasures that I will always cherish. There are so many that I dearly miss, but I will never forget. They were part of my six year journey, a journey that I never imagined would come my way. I will always feel grateful ,and prevliged to have been part of Majicat. Thank you to ALL who make the enormous effort to keep Majicats doors open for me to walk in and out when my time permits. My dream is that some day, old Majicatters will come in and visit for a small celebration, maybe when Yusuf releases his new cd, just a thought. Anyway things change, the years pass, and everyone has their reasons for coming and not coming here, again, thank you for the wonderful memories, I hope more will follow. With all my love and respect....Vicki. xoxo Wishing you warm congratulations on passing such a nice Majicat membership milestone, Vicki, and a "Happy Anniversary", as well. Your "presence" among us is a "present" for each of us. This is for certain, as we are all blessed with your kind friendship, thoughtful posts, keen insights, and always supportive words and deeds. What an honor it is for me, what an honor for each and every one of us, to have been a part of your journey, and how fortunate I am (and we are) to be able to call you "friend". May you always walk through these "Majicat doors" (I loved the way you expressed this!) carrying with you the bright and shiny luster that is such a part of your being. -Bud

Thank you for sharing a great collection of photos. It's one in the morning and after looking at all these photos, pretty sore eyes now, but worth looking at. Is this a German site? Noticed photo number 89, the young Cat seemed to be a bit of a nail bighter, and not very clean nails I might say. Sorry just making a small trivial observation. And photo 66, I think, may be I'm wrong, but this does not look like our Cat, burning toast. Could make comments on many, but too late, maybe another time. Once again, thank you Ale. Yes, it's a German site - it's MY site and I'm glad that you like it Adding my appreciative applause and enthusiastic endorsement of Monika's Cat/Yusuf site: It is brilliant and the love, dedication and care that M. pours into it is evident for all to see. Your site is truly a treasure-trove, Monika. Thank you for this great contribution to Cat/Yusuf fans and admirers far and wide. -Bud

made this in a few minutes for some kind of draw game , thought i'd share it here, you can probably all guess which concert this was What a fantastic capture of Yusuf, Ode! You are an extremely gifted artist and charaterist. Judging from the flowery appearance of his microphone stand, I'd have to guess that we're seeing "Cat" during a particular Majikat Tour concert stop. -Bud

I've borrowed the title of this thread from a post on Yusuf's Facebook page last fall. Today being "International Record Store Day", I thought I should share this now. A couple of weeks before Xmas, I had an interesting experience. I was shopping at our local music store when I came across a new vinyl section. Maybe it wasn't that new and just didn't notice it before. In any case, I started flipping through the LPs that were there, running my fingers across the row of LPs that were side by side (not face up) and noticed an album with a royal blue side. I immediately knew what it was and at that moment I was taken back some 35 years ago or so. I picked up the LP and it was, of course, "Tea For The Tillerman". Seems just like yesterday when I would spent countless hours in the old record shops down in Montreal. It was definitely a good feeling. Well, I bought the album, knowing that it was the "Back To Black" LP re-edition and that it was the gatefold version. I never was able to find the gatefold one back in the day, since I started collecting Cat Stevens' albums only around 1975. By that time, there were no more Tilerman gatefold album. I thoroughly enjoyed this post (a portion of which appears, above), Charles. You truly have some great long-playing treasures in your collection. In so many ways, including, even, the smell (yes, the "smell"!), nothing can beat a recording on vinyl. I was heartened to recently read (in an article that was published in conjunction with "Record Store Saturday") that vinyl releases and sales are very much on the rise. Can't wait to purchase Yusuf's new 'album' in the format of vinyl... We shall, accurately, be able to refer to this as Yusuf's new LP! Again, thank you, Charles, for the 'groovy' memories! -Bud

And these words from our beloved honoree, in addressing the paradox of his peace-loving, clean-living self being elected to the Hall of Fame: “[He] doesn’t drink, doesn’t smoke, doesn’t throw televisions out of hotel rooms and only sleeps with his wife,” Islam said. “I’d say it was a very brave decision — and one which was unexpected and strangely, outrageously rock & roll.” Perfect, Yusuf, spot on! -Bud

Art G.'s quote from his introduction and induction of Yusuf into the R&R HOF are priceless: “Sensitivity with a bass voice — I should have thought of that,” he lamented cheekily at one point. Later, he quipped: “This guy’s better than Paul Simon!” Great stuff! And thank you, Charles, for another great link! -Bud

HI All !!! I just got back from the Induction !!! It was fantastic .. I met so many people Jackson Brown , Paul Schaeffer Swizzz Beats Seymour Stein,Hall and Oates,Courtney Love, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Springsteen and E Street Band .. everyone was at the dinner up on 2nd level for an hour and a half it was like a huge loft part .. with all the most amazing people and such a creative flow!!
They inducted Peter Gabriel first, then CAT!!! Art Garfunkel inducted him and Yusuf mentioned his son .. he needed water so Yoriyos brought it to him and it was nice he said thats my son! I had a wonderful time talking to Yoriyos at rehearsals and also Yusuf and got photos too ..I'm not much of a photo asker but with the Induction I really wanted one because it was a journey and he knew he was home .. and he said that too! 'He sang "Father and Son" first , then "Wild World", and then "Peace Train" I was sitting in the floor areas at table and had a great view . I took some photos but wanted to get here to tell you abit.. Art Garfunkel said that he gave Cat his break because Simon and Garfunkel went away for a bit leaving Cat a chance to have a career .. whatever he was trying to say was very funny .. He also mentioned that was seeker.. and was very well known for those chord changes .. like in Wild World ... they were so original and him ... I have to say from what I heard .. CAT got the best applause and a rush of applause for a good long while .. America and his peers were so happy to have him back .. He got a bigger applause than the KISS Army and that was pretty big ..
I hope they put a video out of Peace Train because it was really good too!! the back up singers did a great job!!!! xo Oh he also thanked everyone for "carrying him " to here .. he knows it wasn't all on his own .. the fans and all who carried him .. now that was beautiful when he said that .. it was a beautiful talk .. I recorded some of it and just put the darn phone down to envelop it all xxoo youtu.be/l3tNh7zOKbg video of one of the performances and some nice close ups.
Ok nighty night for now !!!
I will try to remember more !!!!! just so exhausted from watching all the rehearsals of all the artists and then meeting them Oh at rehearsals he kept saying he missed Alun .. it hurt my heart hearing him say that .. and in his acception speech .. he thank Alun very much so too .. beautiful !!! x
I'm sooooooooooooooooo over the mooon about CAT getting in .. he was happy .. he had quite the last few days too!! he has a blast on the Jimmy Fallon Show have you seen the videos .. I copped some tickets from a dear friend and go in to see it LIVE!!! It was amazing !!!!!!! ok nightnight!!! Aurarisma
Christina, thank you so much for posting this fantastic eyewitness account of last evening's Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremonies. We at Majicat are fortunate, indeed, to have had such an ace correspondent at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn, USA. We owe you much! Your rich, detailed description has enabled me, and all of our fellow Majicatters, to experience Yusuf's ascendacy into the Hall in vivid terms. This AM, it was stated on a local morning show that Yusuf's exchange with his son Yoriyos, combined with his performance of "Father & Son" was one of the high points of the evening. As he never fails to do, Yusuf made us proud, as have you, Christina, with your marvelous first-hand account. Congratulations to Yusuf on this well-earned, well-deserved honor! And many thanks to you, Christina. -Bud

You are welcome and I thank you, Christina, as I 'second that emotion', as the great William "Smokey" Robinson once wrote and sang. I surely know that you will try your best on all of our behalf (hmmm... possibly that should read "behalfs" or "behalves"?). However matters turn out: Thank you! -Bud

Tillerman Strolls the Red Carpet On the eve of his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on April 10, Yusuf Islam – formerly known as Cat Stevens – writes exclusively for Rolling Stone Middle East about his life and career. And imagines what some of his albums' characters might make of it all. rollingstoneme.com/music/the-cat-looks-backWhat a revealing article, Charles! Thank you for bringing this to our attention. It was terrific to learn of Yusuf's reaction to being selected to the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame in such a detailed fashion, and the manner in which he expressed it (through the eyes of his beloved 'cast of characters') was as clever as it is delightful. I am also happy that he shares the saga of his life's journey once again, so that many who haven't previously known of his personal story, might now be aware. All in all, a wonderful find -- Thanks again! -Bud

This could have been posted in the Catspotting section as I discovered it yesterday, listening to the radio in my car. Just as I was about the get out, this version of "Morning Has Broken" started to play, so I sat there to listen and I found the arrangement so beautiful it send chills down my spine! I waited until this morning to check the database of the classical radio station to see what exactly I had heard. Well, it's from the album "Blanc" ("White") from Canadian classical violinist Angèle Dubeau accompanied by her long-time all-female string ensemble, "La Pieta". The album came out about a month and a half ago, but I didn't realize it contained this piano and string version of "Morning Has Broken". The album was recorded after the artist battle with breast cancer. She said she took refuge in the songs of the artists presented on the album and that obviously include our Cat. From liner notes: “BLANC like purity and serenity. BLANC for luminous music that can bring interior peace through its strength and powerful evocation. Fully charged emotions that reflect the strange solitude found in illness. After months of battle against cancer, music has been my focal point, it has brought me comfort, tranquillity and sometimes, an essential escape. This music is of Brubeck, Dompierre, Golijov, Hisaishi, Morricone, Mozetich, Munsey, O’Connor, Phillips, Sakamoto, Schyman and Stevens. A music without artifice, real and filled with hope. This album tells my story, the story of a woman like many others who had to fight against illness and, serenely, came out of it stronger.”... You can listen to the complete track at the following address (scroll down) and you can actually buy it. Some of the proceeds will go to the fight against breast cancer. Morning Has Broken (E. Farjeon/Cat Stevens/Rick Wakeman) played by Angèle Dubeau (violin) and "La Pieta" (string ensemble). Piano: Louise Lessard. Arrangements: Gilles Ouellet www.analekta.com/en/album/?dubeau-angele-blanc-for-each-album-sold-on-analekta-com-2-will-be-given-to-the-quebec-breast-cancer-foundation.1757.htmlI should add that the CD was number one in sales at the music chain store where I bought my copy today and a lot of the tracks are played all the time on that classical radio station from Montreal. Artist website: www.angeledubeau.com/?lang=enCharles, thank you for providing this excellent 'head's-up'. Thanks to your post, I was able to discover that I am able to purchase Angele Dubeau's "Blanc" as an MP3 album via amazon.com in the USA. I am sure that this is a beautiful and inspired set of tracks, and I am very much looking forward to the pure listening pleasure that awaits. Many thanks again! -Bud
