This is probably a really dumb question, but I was wondering if anybody knows what a "Mona Bone Jakon" is?

An often asked question, lol and it seems Yusuf's answer is varying now ;D So I'll quote a chapter out of the November Issue of Classic Rock:- Some bedsit boys believed that the Mona Bone Jakon title was an enigmatic code for a male erection, a rumour that Stevens is quick--though not too quick to deny. "No nothing like it, I mean all rock songs in some sense have got a sexual connotation. That's what rock'n'roll itself is all about. Ask Muddy Waters what he meant by a mojo. What is a mojo? And how do you get it working? And all the mumbo jumbo that went with it. It was kind of trendy to leave yourself unexplained back then. Dylan has been doing it ever since. What are songs about? About three minutes." He giggles at the memory.

It is also rather confusing that a garbage can that appears to be spitting is pictured on the 'Mona Bone Jakon' album cover.
The story behind this is that Br Yusuf did the cover artwork to go along with his proposed album title "The Dustbin Cried the Day the Dustman Died". His title was overruled due to its length and 'Mona Bone Jakon' was substituted instead with the same cover art.

I had been wondering whether the artwork held any key to understanding the title. Apparently it doesn't and I can now waste my time trying to answer other ultimately pointless questions. Thanks.

Well, you certainly are more perceptive than I was. The way the trash can lid is positioned over that teapot-spout-like dent suggested a mouth to me, rather than an eye.
Maybe I was influenced by watching Oscar the Grouch in his battered trash can on Sesame Street with my little brother.

No actually the dustbin is crying. I cannot remember what article I saw it in but Cat explains that little concept. It makes perfect sense to me.... ::)but then my mind works like that . lol

I asked my 2 sons for their opinion (seperately), one immediately said "the dustbins crying", the other said "dunno, looks like its spitting", lol. Must say spitting never occurred to me at all.

I suppose it does, but I guess it's just a little too graphic for me, especially at this time of night. Don't know when I first heard about the "Dustbin Cried..." but it always looked like a tear to me.

Sorry but everyone who knows anything about Cat Stevens knows exactly what the title of this album refers to. Your comment to Turan was uncalled for. Turan is a long time member of various Cat Stevens site and has never said or done anything inappropriate. Please stick around and get to know people before you start making judgements. There have been many, many discussions about this topic off and on for years. I would suggest you look up previous threads, both here and at CatStevens.com. There is a wealth of information. ~~cheers MK No perverts allowed !! That comment was so NOT called for > Please!! go to another site if you are going to say such things!! Aqua

Turan is a she. Perhaps you should not be so quick to judge others, or you could see that perhaps you are out of line just a bit. Wow. My simple question has spawned an interesting thread. All the suggestions have been interesting ... some of them have been quite humorous. I originally thought the dustbin was spitting, and the whole ejaculation thing never crossed my mind. But, I must admit that from now on, whenever I look at the album cover, I will hold a silent debate as to whether I'm looking at a grieving garbage can or a horny dustbin ... and a smile will cross my face. I still have no idea what "Mona Bone Jakon" means. I wonder if the "clacking" sound in the song is any kind of a hint. At times, the clacking sounds like an old typewriter, and at times it sounds like some kind of primitive rhythm instrument. Any thoughts on that?

No offense meant to Turan! Actually, I thought it was funny too, but her comment took me by surprise! If you don't know what a Mona Bone Jakon is, check the articles section. Yusuf even says something about that in the Classic Rock interview....although I think he's white-washed it just a bit.

MonaBoneJakon has long been known to be a horny male member. Perverted is hardly a drooling MonaBone Jakon. In wild days of the Free Love and the Sexual revolution, when this album was put out, this was hardly out side the norm. Actually it is staid by the measure of the day.
I don't see any purpose in pretending Cat Stevens was something than what he was.
Flower Power Man,,, Far Feakin out, that is totally Groovey, Share the Love, and the weed,
Peace out, Turan

I don't see what the fuss is about. Turan just said out loud the other option that the 'dustbin' very well could be doing. It was a different day then. The NOW generation was in the process of throwing of the constraints of the 'Establishment'. Flower Power. Free love. Summer of Love. Haight-Ashbury. Love-in. Sit-in. Tune in, turn on, drop out. Don't trust anyone over 30. War is not healthy for children and other living things. Good Morning Starshine, the Earth says Hello. "Dave's not here!" For those of you who may not have lived through this time period, I would suggest that you listen to the soundtrack of 'Hair - The American Tribal Love Rock Musical (1968 Original Broadway Cast)'. www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00000JYU8/104-1963278-2234324?v=glanceYou won't be able to see the cast perform nude, however. The possible actions of the dustbin pale in comparison. It is unrealistic to infer that Cat Stevens was anything other than an exotic and poetic ladykiller. We would have climbed over each other in our overheated frenzy to get to him. This isn't what you would call a Boy Scout. peace, kareema

Ok, I read # 17 > a very good interview from when I was 7 years old ! Thanks Vivian I can see it now but never before, I thought the dust bin was crying? Maybe it is ? But I guess from Cat's / the older generation it WAS or IS or COULD BE a male member But I was just a child then and never heard of that album cover being described as such but live and learn. Peace Aqua

Vivian, this is almost like deja vu, you saying that it is getting hot in here and me replying that yes it is even in Colorado. Now all we need is Into White complaining about our oogling.

This is a question I asked on CS.com about 4 years ago. Yusuf was asked to explain the titles of his albums in Orlando in Feb. 2001 when visiting the University of Central Florida for a lecture. When he came to Mona Bone Jakon, he became very sheepish and said "I won't talk about that one". All of the CS.com members sitting up front just laughed.
