I am not sure if this is the proper forum, if not can you move it, Christine? At any rate, late last night I saw an advert. for a new album by Rod Stewart, he's covering a bunch of different songs and guess what one of them is? Cat's Father and Son! I am not much of a Rod Stewart fan, other than his older stuff from Every Picture Tells A Story, etc, but I am dying of curiousity as to what he sounds like covering Father and Son ... Here is a link to the track listing for his new cd: www.tvatlas.com/prod.aspx?pfid=446I wonder if there is somewhere we can hear this. I heard just a tiny snipet during the advert. and I wasn't liking it much! Anyone else seen this or know anything about it!!?? Ce

I didn't hear this Ce but I would love to. I like Rod Stewart singing "Rod Stewart" but I can't imagaine him singing Father and Son. It should be interesting.

I'm not really a fan of Rod's musically, but I do respect him. He stood up in front of an audience a few years back defending Yusuf from being "involved" with terrorist activities. I'll give it a try.
Peace,Vivian

I agree with you Christalina, loved Rod's "Old" stuff, but him doing Father and Son, not working for me at all.
(I liked Rod's version of First Cut better than Cat's version ...)

Thank you Sue for posting this. I listened and to tell the truth, this is nowhere NEAR Cat's version. I have every look on Cat's face memorized as he sings that song. He was at his most beautiful at that time.

rod will always be better than any boyzones...... Yes, Walter, definitely!!! Rod the mod auld lad fae Scotland (nope, he was born in Holloway, London... ) sure is a fantastic singer, his career might have been way much better than what it turned out to be, but he's still one of the best vocalists all over the world, no matter what kind of commercial crap he might be into (he's no longer,as far as I can see). And yes, I loved him standing up for Yusuf a few years ago, he's not the kind of guy who often gets involved in socio-political stuff, so I can appreciate it even more.

It's easy to second guess what has been done before... But, it doesn't always mean it's better... I like the smooth sound, however I enjoy his raspy and the crackle sound in his voice... I believe this album will do well if you like remakes...

Im not a big Rod fan either I think he should grow old gracefully and not try to behave and look like a 20 year old, "Our Man" has grown into his age beautifully

Agreed, but I wouldn't mind it if he colored the white hair just a tad. He's still got a great face, and unlike most of us..no middle age spread there! All in all, you're right he is aging very well.

Thanks for posting that Suzie. That was actually kind of nice, but I suppose since that song meant so much to me during my teenage years, in my heart and mind, no one will ever be able to sing that song better than Cat Stevens.
Thanks again.

I feel the same. I can't imagine anyone sounding as great as Cat does in this song.

No, I don't think any of Cats covers come close to his standard. Having said that I do like Linda's version's at the Moon & Stars Concert

OH, I like Yusufs gray hair! I'm happy that he is letting it go natural. Having said that, Rods version is nice, it's a typical Rod song. He does a nice job. It just isn't Cats version and it's missing Alun soft voice singing in the back ground on verse 3 & 4. I don't think anyone will ever be able to put the range of raw emotion into Father and Son, the way Cat did. Hmmm.. I liked Rods version of 'Have I told You Lately' as well, but it could never compare to Van Morrisons original, either.

Thanks SuzieQ for the link, I have just listened to it.
I was quite impressed with Rod's version. Actually I was very impressed with Rod's voice. When it first started (the father verse) I thought "Oh no, it's going to be like the Boyzone version where they sang the F & S verses in the same octave". I didn't think Rod could possibly get that higher range for the son because he had started so high! I was pleasantly surprised.
Whilst I think that no-one can sing that song like Cat, I think this is a good cover. Lots of passion.

I am surprised to say that Rod does a great job of putting a lot of emotion into F&S. I would have never expected it out of him at his age, with his loss of vocal intensity ... but he DELIVERS !!!!! He can really squeeze the very last sentiment out of every slow song he has ever done. I will always love the young, beautiful, Cat (think black sweater, black tights, black boots; playing the guitar while he is sitting cross-legged in a corner, the camera panning to his face as he sings this song). And,yes,Cat sang the song like he meant it ,but I was engrossed in his face (it was all about being young and infatuated) But, I like Rod's version just as much (not to look at, of course!). As for Yusuf's white hair, I don't like grey hair on anyone, thats just me.

I listened to the full song, and i'm sorry to say guys, but he did it even better than Cat, i really didn't expect this ewww, no way! Rod's version is horrendous! Ruins, sometimes you make sense and sometimes I wonder what planet you're from ;D Each to their own I guess. Nevertheless Rod's version of 'the first cut is the deepest' is very good.

Rod's version is ok, I have never been much of a fan, so it's difficult for me to say. It appears he is a Cat fan though, this is his second time doing a Cat song!
