This is the very biggest, an artist can achieve in German TV. To be at "Wetten Dass..." with Thomas Gottschalk is to be on the very top. It is not only the biggest TV show in Germany, but also in Europe. At the last show in November were there showcasts like Justin Timberlake and Rod Stewart. There always come the real world stars. de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wetten%2C_dass..%3F (in German, but there is an English version too). This will mean a very good place in the German charts!

To avoid any false hopes: The tickets were already alloted on 2 October - long before anyone knew, who will come. www.zdf.de/ZDFde/inhalt/10/0,1872,3984202,00.html

The show begins in 20 minutes! Imagine, that this is so hot, that in the German Wikipedia, it is handled as a "Current event": de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wetten_dassTop stars are people like Denzel Washington, Christina Aguilera, Cosma Shiva Hagen (daughter of Nina Hagen) and Iris Berben (most popular femal actor in Germany)!

It is - as every time - a program from the largest town hall of a major city and full of prominent people. You know, all the family looks that show. It is the last remaining all-family program in Germany. Newspapers write about it on Monday, what was good, and what was wrong. Strange, but everybody likes it and grew up with that.
The only question is: Does Yusuf play one song, or even TWO? This could happen, because it happened before with world stars.

Well, this was just awesom. Cat Stevens came back. I saw it in a bar. They tuned the TV on and made it loud. All people were silent. "Cat Stevens?" - "Really?" - "Yes!!!"
It was such a beautiful scene and with the children choir.
Most important - and in difference to most of these kind of stars - Thomas Gottschalk not only huged him, but took him on his sofa, where the studio guests sit. They had a small talk over 5 minutes and everybody was glad. Yusuf was free to talk about the future of world's children and played suddenly another old song solo on guitar.
The hall was celebrating him, and it is clear now for the entire audience in the German speaking world: This man rocks.
I got tears in my eyes, when I saw little teenagers screaming.

That sounds like such a WONDERFUL show!!!!! And Yusuf sang an old song, solo. I LOVE when he does that. And teenagers screamed...WOW. And he was free to talk about the world's children...FANTASTIC!!!
I want to see it. **Pout**

Thanks for the lovely write-up, arne... so very sweet the way you've worded it.
I see you're in Kiel. I have a cousin who lives in Kiel! I visited Kiel in the summer of 2004. :-))

Yes, a kind of historical moment. This reached so many hearts - I just hope, that it helps all the projects by Yusuf in the future. He was so relaxed and kind. Wonderful, to witnes it in one's "own" TV This was a magic moment.

Have you read the article on the ZDF-homepage (we are talking about a major German news site)? "Yusuf we thank you!" is the headline. They are talking about him as the top star of yesterday, and that it was a special wish for Christmas by the host, Thomas Gottschalk, to invite him, and that he felt blessed. They write, that there are only few musicians in the world, who are so beloved. One can say about Thomas Gottschalk, what one wants, but this was a great gesture, because he did it for us all: Regarding the applause during "The Wind" - I guess, the audience was just happy and didn't realise that song so much. It was the event itself, which made them clapping. The best would be a Yusuf tour in Germany with 5 concerts. This will be for sure a big success, after we have seen, how much the people in Germany were yearning after him.

Doch. "Was bedeuten da schon Namen oder Religionszugehörigkeit."What's in a name... or religious affiliation... a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. Rauschendes Besuch. And I see no reason why you can't clap to The Wind. C'mon people now. Smile on your brother. Everybody get together, try to love one another right now. kareema

Here a real photo (no screenshot) You know, Thomas Gottschalk is one of the richest Germans, but he buys his clothes in 2nd hand shops - really! and the news say, that yesterday many people phoned and protested against his ... beard!!! Weird Germans! However, this is a leather jacket with kitsch, and just before Yusuf's appearance, three kids won a bet to dinstinguish five different types of incense just by smell. Gottschalk, who was self a catholic altar server, performed it really cool and was suddenly in his element. The kids won an audience to the pope, and after that happy moment came Yusuf on stage as ultimate guest of the evening.

arne,
did you see the Yusuf Islam Gewinn-Spiel on the "Yusuf Islam is wieder da!" page linked off the main ZDF "Wetten, dass?" article page.
I got my Eintritt confirmation back already.
The link won't work when I try to post it.
Also the Spiegel site link you posted above has restricted access.
Can you get around it? Danke vielmals.
