WOW and I missed THIS!!!!!! Now I really want to cry! The SunU2 back YUSUF I’VE been to some gigs where the support act hasn’t been up to much. But YUSUF, aka CAT STEVENS, had a little Irish act called U2 under him on the bill at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire in London last night. The rock legends stunned the crowd when they bowled on stage to play a rare acoustic set at the Island Records’ 50th anniversary show. BONO sang U2 hits One and Vertigo before Yusuf joined the band for a cover of BOB MARLEY’s One Love. Yusuf’s set showcased new tracks from his album Roadsinger alongside classic hits from his back catalogue. Dad rock at its best.

What a brilliant show.
He was witty, so at ease and delivered the songs perfectly. Great mixture of old and new and so good to hear "Ruins", "Just Another Night" and "Lilywhite" live again after all these years.
The audience loved him and by the look on his face he was well chuffed.
Great having his son and his band kick the show off. They put on a good performance.
Well done Yusuf. It's nice to see you looking so comfortable again and enjoying yourself on stage and may you continue to do so.

Must say this.
Something that bought a smile to my face was being outside before the doors opened and hearing the "ticket touts" saying "Buy or sell tickets for Cat Stevens".
Haven't heard that in years.

Yes the majicats are still partying Some are still touring London and some are on their way back. But what a night. Very briefly as it has been non stop and some majicats are coming round to me tomorrow evening. More partying. Some of us got at the empire at about 4pm and starting queuing outside, there they brought the VW of Yusuf so we could have pictures taken with it. Me next to the van - Next to the van was a nice man who gave some of us a Yusuf T Shirt and all it cost us was a smile. Michelle gave him one of her T Shirt and he wore it. Yoriyos came out and signed a few things for people. I was very lucky and managed to stand in the front row with Meg (Rubylove) as we are both small it was great. Then the crowds did begin to push and today I have the bruises to prove it. But it was worth it.even all that standing up. Bono gave us all a lovely surprise. Then Yusuf. He was so good that I am really lost for words. He laughed, joked and looked as it he really did want to be there. To be honest I took so many photos I have just posted a few. "I TOLD YOU I WAS VERY CLOSE." But honesty it was so nice to meet up with Majicats that I have met before and the new ones which I have just met. Its been a pleasure. Thank you all.

Review: Yusuf and Friends @ Shepherds Bush EmpireFunny thing happened in Shepherds Bush last night. A bunch of otherwise normal looking, averagely-40 something year-olds became embarrassingly emotional. En masse. It was billed as a concert but was more like an audio-group-hug. For last night saw the return of Cat Stevens, Yusuf, to the London music circuit. He’s back folks, and if anything better than ever. The gig was part of Island Records’ 50th birthday party, which comprises a week of pretty impressive line-ups. The evening kicked off with what we took for a regulation warm-up band - Noxshi - playing, well, “music designed to be infectious on the level of the subliminal harmonic brainframe”. Quite. Good stuff actually, but a bit grungey for us. Turns out that lead singer Yoriyos is actually Yusuf Junior. Yup, it was a family evening.Next up was the inimitable Baaba Maal. Songs of sunshine and faraway places. Party time. Bongos, and dancing - and that was just the audience. He has a new album (Television) coming out, and to celebrate he did his encore with a few *surprise guests* - U2, no less. Just love it when you get more for your money at a concert rather than less. Bono paid tribute to Maal’s work for charity in Africa, and they went on to bring the house down with a cover of Bob Marley’s One Love. Rather than buy a cheesey mix of re-hashed Summer oldies this year, do yourself a favour and grab a copy of Maal’s album - it’ll stir you in ways that you didn’t know existed. Time for the main event, humbly introduced by Bono. Yusuf Islam had but to walk on stage to cause uproar: the first UK concert of a man who had practically vanished from the public eye for 30 years was never going to be anything other than a sensation. He performed songs from his new album, Roadsinger, and chatted unselfconsciously with the crowd about his journey over the last decades: we were left in little doubt that he felt that he had come home again. And he graciously turned out old favourites from what he called ‘that other thing that I did’ - his first career: Father and Son, Wild World (which was sweetly dedicated to his grand-daughters, who were in the audience) and Peace Train. The man is a living legend (he even referred to the Odyssey himself, although in quite a different context), and London’s muserati had turned out to see him. Londonist felt very very privileged to be there and to witness a little bit of musical history in the making. londonist.com/2009/05/review_yusuf_and_friends_shepherds.phpWHAT a nice review !!!!! The article disappeared. So I guess, they decided to cut the article and photos for some reason. I read the article about Susan on the front page as well, looking for the original article. So, it must be a gossip rag.

I know that Yusuf is on U Tube. I was also taping, some good and some funny. Thought I would share this one with you as I think its funny. This is purely us having a good time. The dirty laugh is Meg (Rubylove) and when I asked Yusuf a question and then he replied I must of lost it for a minuet thats why the video goes all over the place. Sorry about the singing. www.youtube.com/watch?v=4AhniY-_LK8

Yes, I see Yusuf is holding up that Wanted poster we've been looking for. I appears to have been folded up. I wonder if it comes inside anything, like the vinyl album I've seen for sale. Has anyone bought the vinyl yet? It's quite pricey but I've read that it comes with a book, 12 pages I think.
Has anyone seen this poster available anywhere yet??

OK so it's taken me a day to get my head back together before posting a review of the concert. It went on well over an hour longer than I thought and finished after 11pm! So we had to dash like like the wind away to get the underground back to Victoria and just made our last train home. So humbly, I apologise to all Majicatters waiting outside afterwards. I thought we could have an hour's chat but it was not to be - and, Vicki, I was desperately sorry to miss seeing you, as was Annie. She wanted to thank you so much for your support through her cancer! Thank you again - when will we ever get the chance to meet now?
Anyway, back to the gig. The downside was that we had to stand for 4 hours and those of us of a certyain age suffered with our backs and necks!!! Also visibility wasn't great. I was only 4 rows back but the first four rows apart from SuzieQ and Joanne were realatives of Goliath - amazing, so even from there we only saw the top part of the performers. I much prefer seated gigs!
It began with Yoriyos's band. Although I really enjoyed the gentle Bury My Heart cd, this wasn't my cup of tea. Too old, I'm afraid and I like gentle stuff. Also he balance was wrong and it was difficult to hear Mohammad's voice as he was the lead singer. This was a shame because some of the songs were quite melodic, if a little loud. I'd like to hear a studio version with the mixing correct.
The sound for Baaba Maal was wrong too with the bass vibrating your trousers. however, I found the complex rhythms fascinating. There was real skill there! When Bono appeared, I was astonished. It was great to see U2 play that close to the satge! But of course the highlight was Yusuf!
When Bono introduced Yusuf, in a manner which paid tribute to his huge talent, the crowd went wild. I have never been to a concert and neither had my friends where the warmth and love for the performer was so much in evidence. Males and females were 50/50 - the audience wasn't biased towards females as I thought it might be. In the 70's, articles always suggested that he only appealed to females - not so! Males may not have been entranced by his looks (though we may have been envious!) but we were entranced by his huge, unique talent. The first voice shouting out 'We love you, Cat!) was male! You can clearly hear that on the Welcome Home You Tube video!
There was a lot of noise during his songs - some people seemed to feel that whooping and hollering improved his performance - not so! Everyone was singing along too - and whilst I appreciated the enthusiasm, I went there to hear Yusuf, not the people next door singing! Aren't I a grumpy old man!!!!
I felt rather uncomfortable for Yusuf, as I know he hates adulation but the audience was clearly just so grateful to have him back after 30 years. this was something that we never thought could ever happen. Yusuf, though soaked it all up and remained resolutely cheerful and I am certain that he really began to enjoy himself. I hope that people didn't put him off gigging again where people can actually buy tickets rather than winning the few available. Surely it is better to have people who really appreciate you than corporate people who are just there for a night out with the company who have never heard of you?
The reporter for the Daily Telegraph should have had a night at home with the kids. He obviously didn't enjoy it, apart from seeing U2. I hate rap music, so I wouldn't go to a rap gig because I wouldn't enjoy it. I appreciate some people have to report on gigs but send someone who has something positive to say. Yusuf's performance was flawless and utterly professional and another review recognised that! It was just like having Cat back, and anyone who missed seeing him in the 60's and 70's, as I did, put things right at that gig.
It was fantastic to see Alun Davies with him on stage once again and I think this really strengthened his performance. they belong together, those two. Yusuf introduced Alun after the first song and he received a rapturous applause, which he really deserves. He is also dear to the hearts of die hard CS fans! All the old Cat was back - the growl in the voivce and the catchy, jerky timings which makes his music so unique and which I dearly love.
That's about it, really. If you have any other questions, please ask and I'll do my best to answer them! The only sadness I felt that night was that so many of you, Christine included, just couldn't come. I am sorry and I hope that Yusuf gets to play near you sometime soon. He said once again "I'm back!". Thank the Lord for that!
Best to all,
Novim

Here are a few from the lunch we had on the Friday and you all know where that was. ;D The following day Saturday some of the majicats who were still in London came round to my home. We had a great evening. Michelle and Charly Joanne and Mark Heather (Juliette) Malc ans Avril. Cat on TV Vickie (downunder) her sister Helen and Jane B Me and Michele And in the garden. Everyone that come over to the UK were very lucky with the weather.
