This was a very special evening to celebrate the success of 20 years of the Islamia Schools founded by Yusuf Islam. From all those who were able to attend the concert a big thank you to Yusuf's wife Fauzia for setting the ball rolling and having the idea for this celebration, and to all those who worked hard to make the event a great success.
I was sat only four rows from the front of the stage and couldn't have wished for a better view. The stage set created a rich but peaceful backdrop for all the performers, and the sound throughout was superb.
Yusuf hosted the event, and seemed very relaxed and thoroughly enjoying the whole event. The main musical performances were interspersed with speechs from some of the children from the Islamia Schools and also invited speakers such as the boxer Prince Naseem Hamed.
In the first half we were treated to some more traditional style Islamic singing from the Morrocan born singer Khalid Belrhouzi, and also the three piece group 'Qatrunada', who sing in Malay and English as well as Arabic.
All the artists were accompanied by a superb drummer/ percussionist tucked away to one side behind an erray of exotic drums, who did an absolutely fantastic job throughout the evening.
The second half was opened by another 3 piece group this time from the States, called 'Native Deen' who sang their own Islamic compositions in English in a rap style. Yusuf seemed highly amused by the prospect of how some of the more orthodox minded older Muslims would recieve this style. He needn't have worried, they went down extremely well, and their youthful exuberance was just what the audience needed to kick start the rest of the concert.
The next act was South African artist Zain Bhikha, ( who has worked with Yusuf on 'A is for Allah'), again, these were his own songs, which he sang beautifully, a really lovely voice indeed.
Yusuf came back on and said, 'I guess it's my turn now!' with a little smile.
He was supported by the South African vocal group 'Incwenga Voices', and began with a live preview of the title track from 'I look, I see!' a really delightful new song. Next up was a wonderful performance of 'God is the light', with Yusuf in fine voice.
This was followed by Yusuf mentioning that a while ago he had written a song called 'The wind' . A murmur went up, but he quickly added with a smile that he wasn't going to sing that one but a new song which was a kind of sequel to it called the 'Wind East & West', this was another delightful song, and used a larger vocal range than I've heard from Yusuf in a long while, with some very deep notes.
Finally all the various artists from the night and the school children, joined Yusuf on stage for a performance of the new version of 'Peace train', which sounded just like the record, fabulous.
The artists left the stage but all returned for one more song, a traditional Arabic one, with Yusuf and Khalid taking the lead, and Yusuf really enjoying himself and smiling throughout, it created a wonderful ending to the night.

Thanks DJ! Can you remember part of the lyrics of "I Look, I See" and "The Wind in the East and West"?
And did you get to talk after the concert with any of the performers and Yusuf? Did the "Mes Amis" go out afterward together and discuss the event?
I am so happy that Yusuf enjoyed this event and that some Mes Amis were able to attend.
Thanks for filling us in with some details, DJ.

Wonderful review DJ. I'm not sure what I can add other than to agree how seeminly flawless all the performances were. All the elements -- lighting, staging, sound, choice of material, spoken words, etc worked so well together. This was a well coordinated show...very polished and professional. Ahhhh...and let's not forget the Islamia children, the reason for the evening itself. They were so sweet and didn't seem nervous at all performing in such a large venue and they did a fantastic job providing harmonies as well as some narration...really sweet kids Some notables...Zain Bikha, Our World...gorgeous song with a universal theme. I hadn't heard this one before. As Zain sang a video was projected on to two large side monitors. Really artsy classy film (starring Zain, of course ) Native Deen...they were so much fun!! Yusuf ... he was just great, fantastic etc etc. All the superlatives! A more charming and gracious host I cannot even imagine. The best part of it all...he really seemed to be enjoying himself and completely at ease. Peace Train live...YESSSSS ;D The encore....ummmmmm, this was a rather subdued and polite audience in terms of applause and interaction. Yusuf came out to do one last number and said something to the effect...you didn't call me back out here but I'm going to do this anyway -- we laughed hard at that...so cute! It was just wonderful to see him after so many years, and I do mean SEE. Wow...row 5 center sure beats the nose bleed section at Madison Square Garden. He looks fantastic ... healthy happy. Lucy, special tidbit for you: At one point he was walking back on stage to take his center spot to do an introduction. There was a piece of equipment on the floor (maybe a light or something) and it looked like he did one of those hmmm should I go left or right routines...the KCET guitar step-over scene flashed though my mind...hahaha. His little pinkie finger still juts out when he holds the mic...hehe! Okay, I'm probably forgetting alot right now since I'm in the "I'm so sleepy yeah" mindset." Be back with more show highlight (& I may paste bits of this elsewhere too....too tired to re-type ya know). All in all....it was so worth it!!! -jen.

We did hang around a-hem a bit chatting with each other after the show (As Mateaus from cs.com said, we surpassed our first, second and third deadline for leaving...ummm, ya had to be there -- it was bloody cold out!!! And yes, a group of us moved on to a lounge/bar in one of the hotels to have some Irish coffee compliments of Meg (aka bamboozle)... who by the way is an absolute sweatheart. It was so much fun meeting the other sitemembers ... more about all that jazz later. -jen.

You made me feel I was there, without spending the money or going to the trouble of traveling. Thanks! (are you still in London, Jen?) I'm glad Yusuf had a nice time too. I'm glad everyone had a nice time!! ;D I'm looking forward to hearing his new songs. And I can imagine how nice Peace Train sounded. Heck, all you really need sometimes is your imagination. Like the Moody Blues say: "thinking is the best way to travel." Nevertheless, meanwhile... for me... I'm thinking: "there'll be another moment." (being optimistic!)

Jen, I kept looking at the first picture on the slide show, trying to figure out which one was you! ) And which ones were the rest of the dotcommers. Sounds like you had a fantastic time, thanks for sharing your thoughts and feelings. Loved the bit about the Irish Coffees. Sounds like the meetings and time you spent with other people from the site was really fun! Welcome home!

Jen, Oh, that was so cute when he said, "you didn't call me back out here but I'm going to do this anyway." Oh my goodness, he has a way with words. So cute.
Oh, to be so close to him and the other performers and not get to say hello. That might be too much for me. I mean I would have loved to at least said hello after traveling that far, but I know that most performers don't do that. It's just a dream.
I'm glad that you got to chat with the other site members. Did you have any difficulty finding each other? Oh, I bet you had a blast! Sounds like so much fun! Did you get to take any pictures? (of the Mes Amis and the concert?)
Lucy quoted: "thinking is the best way to travel."
That's the only way that I get to travel! LOL! But it sure does make it better when someone can describe it for us. You are our eyes.
Thanks for sharing with us and welcome home! ;D

Thanks for sharing with us and welcome home! ;D Peace, Faithfullight Faithful, a bunch of us stayed in the same hotel so Marybeth, myself, Joanne, Colleen and Kim saw quite a bit of each other. I recognized Colleen straight away in the breakfast room of the hotel Sunday morning...the overalls were a dead give away . We all had at least one late night chat session in the lounge...talking about everything really from the silly to the serious. All 4 of these ladies are a lot of fun! We didn't meet up with the others until Monday night...we had a little pre-show get together at our hotel lounge. Wow...I don't think that place usually gets this kind of action....lol. a fellow who posts as MajiKat on cs.com and another as K@tmandu came ... really nice guys and very big Cat Stevens fans. MajiKat travelled all the way from Germany for the event and K@t came from England. Meg eventually joined us there too. We were all very excited, took lots of pictures and were just generally happy to be sharing this special event with others who could understand. A really nice feeling. At the concert we just kept bumping into more sitemembers and CS fans in general. There must be some special homing signal that we give off...haha. HTST finally found us after having arrived at the hotel after we'd already headed out to the hall. Novim and Annie were sitting in the same row, DJ wasn't far away, and we bumped into Cristalina and her husband in the bar area. It was so funny to greet each other with these silly names!! Some how I think I managed to miss George...darn. Well, what can I say...sure (I think) we all would've liked to have had a chance to say hi to Yusuf but time didn't allow it I suppose. He did give us a lovely acknowledgement, thanked us for coming and said he loves us. What more can you really hope for than that. -jen.

Hey DJ and Jen, Thanks so much for painting such a fine portrait of this special, magical evening for all of us. As everyone else here has already said, you guys were all there for us in our hearts, being our eyes and our ears. You were all in our thoughts so much these past days and we were all so hopeful to hear what you had to tell us and we all held you in our prayers and thoughts hoping that you had a safe and unforgettable time. It seems that you all surely had just that!!! And congratulations to Yusuf, Fawzia, Zafar and all the performers who were a part of this special remembrance, along with all the most special ~~ the little ones. Take care, Sue V.

Jen,
Thank you for your wonderful reviews. I love reading them, especailly how all the cat fans found each other, got together after the show. It sounded like so much fun. It is almost like we were right there with you. I'm so happy it was well worth all the hassle of flying across the big blue pond to see.

Some how I think I managed to miss George...darn. -jen. It was great to meet you, Jen, thanks for coming up for a quick chat. By pure coincidence George and I had booked seats right next to each other, I couldn't believe the odds on that happening. He's a great guy, very genuine. I'm glad the rest of the fans had a great get together, I would have loved to join you beforehand at the hotel had I been feeling better. It turned out as well that my hotel was just around the corner, as I recognised the name of yours as I passed by on the way back afterwards. Wasn't it cold waiting by the stage door? It's such a shame we never got to greet Yusuf. Chris did chat to his son though who was very charming indeed, and it was he who eventually told us Yusuf had already left by another exit unfortunately. It sounds like we also missed Alun Davies and Gerry Conway, who were in the audience too, from what one of the Cat fans was saying.

This is the first chance I've had to get to the computer since the concert, as we spent the day in London yesterday, I couldn't believe how quickly you posted Jen, don't you need sleep, lol. Anyway I'm sure by now you all appreciate just how much we enjoyed ourselves The children from the Islamia Schools were wonderful, one young boy who sang with Khalid Belrhouzi & Qatrunada, stood giving little nervous smiles as he waited for his cue, but he sang beautifully and could be heard quite clearly. A young girl that did some narration had such a strong powerful voice and was so confident. I particularly liked Zain Bhikha, he has a lovely voice,Native Deen were definately different and livened things up, their lyrics spoke about not drinking and taking drugs, very unlike general 'pop' music. But of course we were waiting for Yusuf and he didn't disappoint us. The performance of 'God is the Light' was wonderful, The Wind in the East & West as DJ said has some very low notes, when he sang the words "in your good company" he was down there with Leonard Cohen! I wll enjoy the new version of Peace Train all the more now I've heard it live, it really bought the song alive for me. The final song for the encore (which I think surprised everyone, I don't think anyone expected him to come back) was absolutely great, everyone was on the stage and the sound just filled the hall, it was a fantastic way to end the concert ;D But I don't know what that song was called, does anybody else? Anyway I am so glad I went. Unfortunately we didn't get to London till 6.20pm so didn't get to meet the others at the Hotel, but we met alot of the site members I think in the bar and outside afterwards, most people cringed as they gave their 'user names' Its really nice to put faces to the names. Oh and one thing that tickled me during the evening, towards the end of the concert when Yusuf was on stage with Khalid and Zain, Yusuf knocked the black spongy part off his mike, he caught it and laughed and when he pushed it back on, he kissed it as if to 'make it better' obviously the actions of a man used to being with children.

Thanks DJ! Can you remember part of the lyrics of "I Look, I See" and "The Wind East and West"? Thanks for filling us in with some details, DJ. Faithfullight I really liked 'The wind East & West' but unfortunately can't remember any of the lyrics, but here are the first two verses for the childrens song 'I look , I see'. I look, I look, I look, I see, I see a world of beauty, I touch, I touch, I touch, I feel, I feel the world around so real, And everything I do I dedicate to you, Cause you made me, I am for you. I listen, listen, listen, I hear, I hear the words of God so clear, I read, I read, I read, I know, It helps my knowledge grow, And everything we do we dedicate to you, Cause you made us, we are for you, I listen, listen, listen, I hear.

Hi Jen and everyone,
I'm sorry I never got to say "hi" at the concert. I did manage to give a little wave to Colleen and Kim who were sitting just behind us. I was with my best pal and we were on a tight schedule. It was good to meet DJ and catch up with Chris A and his wife Annie. I found by chance that I was sitting between a couple of people I knew but had never met!
I thought the concert was a great experience. As everyone else has said, the children did so well. It was no ordinary school concert and what a great experience for them. True professionals, they will go far.
The adults were in fine voice too: Khalid Belrhouza looked as if he stood seven feet tall and had a voice to match! Qutranada harmonised perfectly, Zain Bhika sang some beautiful melodies, Muslim rap artists Native Deen got things rocking and had a good message.
It was quite strange, as once or twice I glanced at the two large video screens either side of Yusuf and the darker projected image had given the illusion that his beard was trimmed and his hair lengthened, it looked like the Cat had reappeared momentarily! A little spooky that! I really liked 'God Is The Light' and the new song 'The Wind East & West'. This "Nasheed genre" is okay, certainly impressive!
Clearly, Yusuf looked very happy and comfortable on stage. Hopefully this bodes well for future events.
During the concert and as I was leaving I overheard Cat fans saying "Wow", "Great" and "What a privelege it is to be seeing this!" Congratulations to Mountain of Light and Islamia School.

Faithfullight Zafar at Yusuf's site was kind enough to send me the lyrics to 'Wind East & West'... I've followed the wind, east and west, I know I'll never rest 'Til I've found that happiness In your good company I've wished a thousand nights, To be in your heavenly light, That day I find my side, In your good company I've followed the wind east & west, I know I'll never, never rest, 'Til I've found that happiness, In your good company The lake of Kauthar waits for you, And all beloved people who God has blessed and chosen to be In your good company I've followed the wind, east & west, I know I'll never, never rest 'Til I've found that happiness In your good company

Hi everyone Would just like to say a big THANKS to everyone I met on Moday night for making is so special. I was sitting behind HTST and next to me I got chatting to 2 ladies from Belgium - one of them had been a cat fan for years and yet didn't know anything about majicat or CS.com - I'm sure they will have paid us a visit now. I cannot add anything more to what's already been said other than that it was a unique experience for us all and I'm glad that I was in such good company to enjoy it
My love to you all Meg xx
