HTST, thanks for the summary of Hamza Yusuf's talk. I found myself recoiling a little, or perhaps tuning him out, just because of his style. At the same time I envy someone who can emote in that way. -jen. Sorry if I came across as being too crictical in my earlier post , maybe Hummingbird states better how I felt about Hamza Yusuf's speech, I did tune him out so maybe didn't fully understand what he was saying, it was his style of delivery, just overpowering. I agree it was a night of rememberance for Islamic schools and I knew there would be speeches, I found all the others to be fine and there was a general feeling of peace and goodwill. I also think more concerts of this nature could really help non muslims to understand that Islam is a peaceful religion.

Cristalina, I wanted to hear what you truly felt in honesty, so please don't apologize for how you felt. I am looking for religions that try to embrace each other in harmony and growing past their self-centered focus. It looks as if this concert was a blessing to help our world grow together. That's what I am hoping to find. Peace, Faithfullight

Faithful, I once heard a portion of a lecture by Hamza Yusuf and my friend heard him lecture on the same subject, where Hamza was raking Muslim men over the coals for how many of them treat women. He was teaching about how women are supposed to be treated and so forth. Now I don't know much about his 'tolerance' level, but I have found that many Muslim converts display a certain level of tolerance because they have been on the other side of the picture.
Love, K/C/Moonshadowgirl. I wish I could have some of those boxes where you check the appropriate box. Hey, we should start a poll... What will we call her today...hehehehehe

Faithful, I really shouldn't criticise because I am an awful presenter. But I think for an audience to grasp essential points, there should be some highs and lows of voice and emotion. It helps direct your attention better that way, that's all.

He was teaching about how women are supposed to be treated and so forth. K/C, I'm glad that he is trying to teach men to treat women with respect. There is just no sense for women to be abused by anyone, especially by their husbands who are supposed to share their lives together in utmost peace, respect and harmony. Women were not created to be a man's slave! They are spiritual partners who choose to travel life's journey together by helping and supporting one another. Now I don't know much about his 'tolerance' level, but I have found that many Muslim converts display a certain level of tolerance because they have been on the other side of the picture Love, K/C/Moonshadowgirl. It is sad that it takes some people to feel oppression themselves before they can realize the injustice of it. That is most sad indeed, but the aggressive oppressors don't realize what they do in sin when they oppress others because they are focused on their own selfish wants and desires because they feel superior to others. See, that evil attitude of arrogance pops it head up in injustice again and again! When people can understand how it feels to be overpowered by an aggressive tyrant, then they realize that it is wrong to do so to others. Some people are so stuck on themselves that it takes the force of others to stop their ruthlessness. I wish I could have some of those boxes where you check the appropriate box. Hey, we should start a poll... What will we call her today...hehehehehe Well, K/C, you're still the same person no matter which name you go by. A name doesn't change who you are, it just identifies you. So whichever you feel comfortable with is the one that I will use. Love ya! Faithfullight

I look for sincerity in people's voices and I also look for logic and a loving nature. Thanks for sharing your view. Peace, Faithfullight

Faithful, I was married to a Muslim man and I was married to an American man and I had a few relationships down the road of my past. For some reason I attract men who try to be abusive. I guess I have this magnetic charm for those types...LOLOL But I have learned that abuse from men is not an Islamic thing or any religious thing for that matter. It is just a thing that many (and I mean many of all races and religions) men feel is their right, that because they are men they have a right to belittle women. Whether a guy is a Muslim, an athiest, or whatever he should not bully women around. I am not just talking about physical abuse...words hurt harder than fists do and just because a woman is not physically harmed it does not make it right to insult her or belittle her and it also isn't right for a woman to do the same. I have learned that it has nothing to do with God and religion...it has to do with arrogance. One thing I have learned in the last year is that I don't have to take abuse and I refuse to be with any man who will be abusive. When the abuse starts I run for the closest exit. I am better than that and if I take abuse then it becomes my fault for allowing it to continue.
About bigotry, I used to be a major bigot. I literally come from redneck roots and for years practiced bigotry without giving it any thought whatsoever. It took being on the receiving end of bigotry to realize how wrong it is. No one should be put down for anything but a bad character. Other factors should not even come into place.
About my name, my nickname has been Cat for over 20 years. It takes the first three letters of my Christian name, my love for felines, and the fact that I have been a Cat Stevens fan for so long. People just started calling me the cat lady and then it was shortened to Cat.
Love ya, Cat or Catherine...

I am not sure what the rest of the group thought of the other yusufs talk, but i found it quite entertaining and thoughtful when he included the cat stevens fans in his talks by quoting lines from cat's old songs to back up his speech including one from "silent Sunlight". HTST Hi HTST!!! I liked it as well, thought it connected the dots, so to speak. Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but as we were waiting in the freezing cold, at the artists entrance, Megs phone rang...and the tune it played?Moonshadow!! Was really very funny. I have a photo or two I'd like to share , does anyone mind me posting a few photos? Everyone looks good Mary Beth

I am better than that and if I take abuse then it becomes my fault for allowing it to continue. Yes, you are better than that. No one deserves to be treated that way! Cat, I think that a lot of people get so enthusiastic with evangelizing their faith that they can't see themselves when they get puffed up with arrogance, thinking that their view is the only way. There is only one Creator who gave all of us our beginning, although we may have a different understanding of Him. The main point is that God does want us to rise above our sins. We need to focus on His chosen apostles for examples of righteousness and we need to always turn to God in prayer (meditation) for His illumination. God's Holy Spirit will teach us and guide us. That's what I had found, and that is also testified in the scriptures. "Cat" suits you fine. Love, Faithfullight

Not to be a stick in the mud, but can we get back on topic?
I find it sad when people like DJ or Chris or anyone else start a thread concerning a certain topic, and it itaken clear into another direction. I've seen it happen before! Pease try to post related to the topic on the top of this thread or start another thread.

Okay Dokie Christine! I wonder if the CD of the NOR will include the speeches of the guest speakers. Or will the CD only be the music? Anyone have any idea? Peace, Faithfullight

I received a NOR program guide and cd from Kim yesterday...thank you thank you Kim! Just had a very brief listen to the sampler cd included in the program this morning - very nice! Just from what little I heard, the music seems a little different from some of the previous releases, but it's all very very nice (can I add any more adjectives here? lol) I am looking forward to the cd/dvd release ;D The NOR program guide was very professionally done.
salaam...

I just listened to the sampler cd in full and I have some comments....Native Deen - Wow! I really like their beat! Zain's child - Wow! What a beautiful voice that child has...Qatarunda (sp?) another wow...Yusuf's "I look I see" is simply amazing and quite different than some of his other stuff, very nice indeed! I have a question though. In this version of Tala' al-badru 'alayna, what type of instrument am I hearing very faintly in the background? It almost sounds like a cello or organ...Anybody know? I'm looking forward to this cd coming out!
salaam....

The little bit that I heard of the vocal combinations are simply amazing...It wouldn't surprise me if it was just voices making that sound, and even wondered that too. ;D
