Christine,
What a FIND! That was such a super article to read and one that is so different from all the others too. I'm so glad you came across this one tonight. It sort of gave me the chills to read it though .... knowing full well what was going to come next in the life of Cat Stevens .....

Be sure you read some of Gary's diaries on other musicians, they are just as interesting. I just finished reading the Diary on George Harrison. I'd love to have an hour to talk with Gary on all the diifferent musicians he has met in his career.

Yes, good find Christine. Interesting in a quircky sort of way. Some of the description and conversation seemed a little phoney to me...but who knows (?)
I wonder who the girl was?
I wonder what the dinner jacket was for?
I wonder why I'm wonderin....

Chris, That's a really interesting article. I guess his impatience to get out of the music world was building up for a long time, and Gilbert unfortunately was on the receiving end of the worst side of Steve at a crucial point in his life. I love this stuff, thanks again for the link. One thing though, no wonder Steve wasn't happy with the studio if he was sharing it with a herd of cows... I know it was Long View Farm, but surely you meant 'Diary of a Studio Owner' rather than 'Dairy'. Although, come to think of it, maybe that's a stream of milk on the cover of 'Back to Earth'

Hahaha, DJ!!
I was thinking that Cat certainly recorded in some interesting studios. The studio in Jamaica, the one in Canada (overlooking the snowy mountains) and this one on a farm!!
It sounds like it must of been very quaint.
Moooo!!

Sue,
I'm starting to think that maybe that mystery girl was Lucy too. It seems to make sense anyway.

Hello Satire,
Lucy is Lucy Johnson, a girl from Boston he dated in Spring of 1979. I don't think he dated her for very long, he ended up leaving her to marry his wife Fawzia in September of 1979.
So how long have you been a fan?

No, actually it was me...
- the other Lucy.
I guess he broke a date with this woman. A dinner date. Thus the tears and the bad-mooded Steve. What a louse he must have been at times! He must have been a frustrating, fickle, moody, unpredictable p-i-t-a!

Thank you for posting "The Diary of A Studio Owner"! I hadn't seen that article before. Love the anecdote about Mecca.
Wasn't Lucy a beautiful young lady? If I had been Steven's mother, I would have objected on the basis of her age alone. (The Rule of Half Plus Seven!) I can also appreciate that Steven might have recognized that an upper middle class American girl who longed to go horseback riding and dance in formal evening attire might not fully comprehend the meaning of Islam.

Sixteen! Good grief, and how old was Ms. D'Arbanville? Fifteen or so? Judging from how lovely Fauzia looks even today, she couldn't have been much older, but I'm wildly speculating. He seems to have had quite an appreciation for youth.
And having a sixteen year old daughter of my own (almost) I don't like it, not a bit. Hm.

"Life is made up of changes" - Yusuf
one thing is for certain .. Theres always going to be change.. and evolving ... that time when he was making the last album as Cat .. sounds like it was frenetic and clocks were ticking and .... must have been a very interesting time frame in his life .. personally and professionally .. choices choices or choices...deadlines everywhere... I thank God daily he is back on the road to find out and coming out with a new album and a musical... God has a way of bringing us back to our charisms.. the annointed gifts He wants us to share with humanity ...
it reminds me of the 10 months I lived in a monastery .. .after a vision I had .. I wrote some amazing poetry and music.. did alot of good work .. I look at it now and say who wrote that !! ? I was in a way another person .. had a lot of zeal going on ... once that cloud cleared I could see much clearer and find a better fit of me .. authentically altho I learned alot along that way ... Ok .. I'm rambling .... xoxo night zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz .... xxoxoxo Peace xoxxoxoxo of cake!
ps.. yes purplemoon she was a beautiful young lady .. age is so relative to me .. nothing but a number ... when one is clear n connected ... in my opinon ..... all depends ... this part that you wrote purplemoon>>>quote :that an upper middle class American girl who longed to go horseback riding and dance in formal evening attire might not fully comprehend the meaning of Islam" makes me rather chuckle... so muslims dont ride horses or dance I'm sure horseback riding is nothing compared to the nail bed he lays on often to relax and balance his energy ... times change ... to me the true meaning of Islam for himself is something I believe he found not so long ago..... and thats why he looks so joyful .... and glistening lately .. I mean .. he is more liberal and not with the conservative sect that he got away from ... Praise God for the Joy of Loving God... and keeping ones childlike wonder .. I remember a lecture he gave and it was on JOY primarily ..and how one must show it live it be it ..

And having a sixteen year old daughter of my own (almost) I don't like it, not a bit. . Ms. Purple Moon's Algebra Lesson: The Rule of Half Plus Seven: ---------------------------------- You should not date someone unless the difference between your age and half of their age is less than seven: If you're 16, you can date people 15 to 18. If you're 18, you can date people 16 to 22. If you're 30, you can date people 27 to 46 If you're 60, you can date people 37 to 106 ... Some anecdotal evidence of the rightness of this theory: Paul McCartney violated The Rule with his previous marriage.

Age is relative ...
Love is a mystery and wonder .. cant tap an age to it .. especially if it is true love and not dysfunctional love ..
I only follow the Ten Commandments anyway .. lol ...

Well here in Ohio we have a law on the books called Statutory Rape. Just sayin' My comment about Yusuf's wife's age was really just a compliment. She really is a pretty lady. I haven't the foggiest idea how old she is and it's none of my business anyhow. I'm just playing. But yeah, that was the 70s. A different time -- and there are certainly 15 year olds much more worldly and mature, in their own ways, than my daughter. Who is not allowed to date anyone over 17, presently. I like that age rule Purplemoon stated. Never heard it before, but it sure makes sense. When I was 15 I dated an 18 year old, already out of high school. Nearly married him. Would have been a huge mistake. When I was 21 I dated a 35 year old. Briefly. That was a Totally Ginormous Mistake of Ridiculous Proportions. Anyway, every time I see this thread title I wonder if the studio owner is raising cows or goats. Good night, all.
