If we want to discuss what is happening in Egypt or Martin Luther King, maybe we can start a new thread under "Random Thoughts." While much of this is very interesting, it is not really related to Yusuf's actual song or the opportunity to be part of it. Thank you

Thank you I'm sorry, Jane, but I respectfully disagree with you on this one. The song is directly related to what happened in Egypt.

Just a gentle reminder: Freedom Calling"Yusuf has written a song inspired by events in Egypt." My People - Add your voice to the Call!"Yusuf has written a song which is inspired by the world shaking call to freedom and the removal of oppression from the peoples of Tunisia and Egypt."

Unfortunately it's related to Obama too.
I get that his election was inspiring to the rest of the world because he's an African American, and that just thrills me to bits. I just wish I liked HIM. I just wish he wasn't such a wussy waffling socialist snake-oil salesman.
But I will shut up now because I am sure NOBODY on this board will agree with me. Never mind.

I know that the song is related to what is happening in Egypt, but why can't we keep this thread about the SONG and not about politics?

Your opinion is welcome and as valid as anyone else's, Peacock.
In my humble opinion, the events in Egypt are not about particular political figures other than Mubarak, but about the ideals that humanity aspires to. Obama may not be our cup of tea, but he's our current president whose voice was heard in Egypt supporting the end of tyranny. I mentioned him only in so far as he is related to this topic.

I know that the song is related to what is happening in Egypt, but why can't we keep this thread about the SONG and not about politics? Because politics inspired the song? Did it? Or did Yusuf's caring about people inspire the song? Regardless of what inspired the song, I started a thread about a song and hate to see it go elsewhere, especially to politics.

Because politics inspired the song? Did it? Or did Yusuf's caring about people inspire the song? Regardless of what inspired the song, I started a thread about a song and hate to see it go elsewhere, especially to politics. I would say that both of these inspired the song. And since the song started with politics, the thread isn't really going "elsewhere." For example, if this is not political, I don't know what is: Maybe Yusuf is walking where angels fear to tread. But political songs are not necessarily something to be afraid of. The events in Egypt were about peaceful protest, nonviolence, and freedom, which made them inspirational; and they clearly inspired Yusuf. But I think I understand a little of Jane's concern, because if Yusuf doesn't choose his words very carefully, the inspirational and uplifting message will get lost. So Jane's caution is very, very good if it gives Yusuf a little pause and makes him carefully review his lyrics and be sure the message is what he wants it to be and one that can only be understood as beautiful, hopeful, and loving. And Jane, you certainly can listen to the song without thinking about the events that inspired it, and that's totally fine. But some of us, apparently including Yusuf, also think of the inspiring events behind the song. It'll be interesting to hear the lyrics. I do hope Yusuf has chosen his words wisely.

Why do people here always get so defensive about keeping things so strictly on topic?
Why are some people so keen on telling us what we can and can't talk about?
Good grief, it's getting so I'm afraid to say anything at all because it might not fit in properly.
Okay. No, I'm not. Not really. But just sayin'.

I don't see anyone getting defensive. I also don't see anyone telling anyone else what they can talk about. I have only asked that they be talked about in an appropriate thread.
If I see that there is a new post under a thread called "Song for Egypt" my first thought is that there is a new post about the song. I wouldn't waste my time checking the thread if I knew the post was going to be about something other than the song. If I want to read political content, I go somewhere else; it is simply not why I - and many others - come to Majicat. Keeping things on topic allows people to go to only those threads that interest them; one can think of it as a courtesy to others as we all want to make the most of our time.
Staying on topic is also in the Terms of Use and is in the TOU of every message board in which I participate. It is standard operating procedure in the forum world; I did not invent it. I do, however, think it’s a good idea.

Perhaps you just should not waste your time reading new posts if you see they've been posted by me.
I do not object to staying on topic. I object to having to do it so strictly. I also think that what's on topic is highly subjective and open to a wide interpretation.
I'm done now. Really.

Everyone, who had the pleasure to hear me sing, will say TG that I didn't join the chorus line :-) What about our famous background vocalists from the SBE - Helen and Meg?
There'll never be another night like this!!!

hope some of us can sing in the chorus ,i sing awfull lol can keep tune and then that whole thing with the MP3 player now Regii - if someone can help you record it, you can send it to me and I'll convert it and submit it for you - or send it back to you to submit. Just about every computer has the ability to record a sound file. All you have to do is sing the words "my people." You can do it, Regii! It was to late when i saw it Jane but thanks anyway we will sing together the words on Yusuf's concerts

There'll never be another night like this!!! What a beautiful moment you captured! Your voice adds to the spontaneity and charm. I chose not to contribute a MP3. ( If my voice were in it, would I ever stop talking about it? Probably not ....... .......self-control can be excruciating sometimes ....... )

Well I finally figured out how to record an mp3 file and I sent it in late tonight I know it will not get used, but I still had to try. Do you really think they will use voices that are not in key? ha ha I thought Yusuf was a perfectionist. This is going to be interesting. I also wonder if they will be letting the ones that are chosen know that they are on the recording... I'm sure they would love to know that. Very exciting - what an amazing idea. Yusuf is so innovative. Purplemoon you're funny - but I agree. How would one ever stop talking about it?? Excruciating indeed.

Yusuf is so innovative. There's always that fabulous new digital technology called auto-tune. You don't have to sing on key anymore. I didn't send one in, but if I did, maybe it would be better not to know.
