It's not the question of catching his lips moving out of sync at all; he's miming really well, in fact the whole band does. But can't you hear it's the album studio recording in question? I'm typing from the work at the moment and have no speakers, but remembering 'ad hoc', the clue should be the orchestration part in "Morning has broken" and female backing vocals in "Banapple Gas", none of which can be seen here, of course. They're miming to two studio recordings, that's all. Darling Milan I can assure you even if there are music added tracks that does not mean that the piano Jean is playing is not LIVE and that CAT is not singing LIVE ... He is singing LIVE and that's a fact .
take it for what you want but if you're not in music indie its difficult to understand that .. very little lipsynching went on in the 70's contrary to what some think here .. "added tracks" yes .. but not lipsynching . and" miming" is what Jacques Cousteau did lol... j/k lipsynching is what alot of singers did on Soul Train but you wouldn't catch Cat lipsynching .Todd Rundgren always sang to tracks because number one he wanted to play all the instruments!!!BUT he sang LIVE as well! you are all going to use your layman ideas on this and u can continue to poll if he sang LIVE or not but I don't believe you all understand that parts of the music can be prerecorded and they are called tracks .. and they are added to what is LIVE and that was Jean and Cat . and I surely dont mean any disrespect at all here xoxo only love xoxo It is LIVE vocals definitely . Its quite heartbreaking that one could even think that the vocals on Morning has Broken was taped lol....
peace xoxoxoxo

It's easy to see why someone may get the impression this was lip-synched. Least of which is the clean audio during the song and muddier audio during the clapping. Of course the performance would be mic'd differently.... All the movement of his head and body during the singing and the constant of the audio again would have one wondering...

He is singing LIVE and that's a fact .

I follow ya - you mean he's singing it live over the studio version (or a pre-recorded one for that show) playing in the background, right? I'm familiar with that. Hey, I remember The Beatles guesting on the David Frost show in september '68 - Paul is singing Hey Jude and you can quite clearly hear two Paul's voices - one coming from the pre-recorded tape, and the other from his mic, which was on. Pretty funny. It's on Youtube as well. Still, that voice in MHB sounds very '71 LP to me. Not convinced, sorry. If only he muttered "thank you" into that mic after the song, dammit ;D Hey, that VHS tape... I got it years ago from the newly tonsured bishop.

Steves/Yusuf's always had a spot on voice ! one of the best LIVE voices ever ....

I agree he has one of the most spot on voices ever - but he sure looks like he is lip synching to me too ;D if he is...he's doing a very convincing job with the head bobs. I'm just wondering why this matters so much though? I have to go find Paul lip synching now...

The first clue should be the fact that this recording sounds PRECISELY like the one on the record. I should know; I've listened to it umptyzillion times. And the other two times I've heard it live, he has 1.) performed it WAY too fast, or 2.) started to sing the 3rd verse instead of the 2nd and quickly corrected himself. Which makes me think - he sure messes up a lot, doesn't he? Back then one could ascribe it to "oxeeegin" or something else. Now, I guess we can forgive him for being 63 and a bit rusty. But I suspect anxiety might play a part, too, don't you? Precisely and exactly like the one on "Teaser and the Firecat." I listened to the video and then listened to the one on the album. No doubt in my mind they are exactly the same.

There is a thread somewhere on this - it is from a bootleg CD called "9 Lives." The CD contains demos of three songs that were never released. I'm sure if you Google "Cat Stevens 9 Lives" you can find a free download. This CD surfaced just a few months before the Remastered "Teaser and the Firecat" and "Tea for the Tillerman" were released - both of which contain a few of these demos. It was undoubtedly someone who worked on that project that bootlegged the CD.

"Who'll Be My Love" was his original name for the song that became "Rubylove." Alun Davies' daughter would always ask Cat to "play the rubylove song" so he changed the name of the song.

Ah thank you that solves the mystery of why Rubylove kept appearing when I typed in Who'll be my love..... Sweet anecdote too........

Thanks for the info, Jane. I'm reposting the demo from the "Listening to Now" thread. Some folks might not notice this version of "Don't Be Shy" on YouTube because you can get the later version that was done for the movie. They might think the demo is rougher, less finished and, therefore, skip it, which would be a real shame.
I think this demo really highlights what makes Yusuf one of the greatest - the voice, music and range of expression are flawless IMO. This version is slightly different from the final one and just perfect in its simplicity and beauty.

One thing worth adding: when this CD first surfaced and many either purchased it (eBay) or got it through other means, many of us felt that it was appropriate to pay some sort of compensation to the artist himself. We did that by making individual donations to Small Kindness. While I treasure this CD, I felt it was only right to direct some compensation Yusuf's way because, after all, it is his music. Please consider this if you decide to enjoy this CD.
