Hi everyone, Just want to report on last night's induction ceremony! It was so fantastic. Yusuf's speech was wonderful- he gave thanks to his mother for singing to him as a child. He spoke about all the musicians that influenced him-having high praise for Beethoven! And, of course, he was very funny at times; making reference to the fact that he was surprised he was inducted as he doesn't drink or smoke, doesn't throw TV's out of windows, and only sleeps with his wife! He sang father and son, wild world, and peace train-obvious choices. The audience was up on their feet and singing every word. It was a wonderful experience to be there with all those talents, and to see Yusuf get his well deserved award. Would have loved to have shook his hand though! Maybe next time it was such a full loving speech wasn't it ??!!!!! glad you made it !!! #historyinthemaking next THE ALBUM!

First a very big thank you to all for the videos, photos, and reports of a very memorable night. Happy for all that had the honor and opportunity of being present to witness what we all hoped and prayed for. Such a well deserved long awaited award, for a very special deserving man. Made me very happy and emotional listening to to his ever word. Yes, the old CAT was definitely there, not only were his eyes smiling and shining, but even his CAT'S whiskers were smiling. Thank you again.xox

Thank you Ale, nice articles. I feel even the most sceptical have realized Yusuf and Cat are one in the same, unique, genuine, with a one lifetime goal, spreading love and peace. There's no question, April the 10th, 2014, was the door opener for a U.S tour. No wishful thinking this time, I have a strong feeling it's going to happen very soon.

Back from NYC - what a long show - it started right at seven and ended about 12:20 AM.
Of course, for me the attraction was Yusuf, inducted by Art Garfunkel. Yusuf gave a nice speech (recounted above by Aurasima) and played three great songs (Father and Son, Wild World, and Peace Train). He sounded great - better than he did on Jimmy Fallon.
The backing band was David Letterman's group, led by Paul Shaffer. They were joined by Waddy Wachtel, who played with Yusuf on Father and Son. They never mentioned the choir, but they really sounded great on Peace Train.
There was a smattering of boos when his name was first announced at the start of the evening, and just a few when his induction started but, overall, he received a great reception.
It was everything we expected / hoped for.
Next highlight for me was Stevie Nicks, Sheryl Crow, Emmylou Harris, Bonnie Raitt and Carrie Underwood singing Linda Ronstadt songs.
Nirvana was great, with Joan Jett, Kim Gordon and Lorde taking Cobain's vocals.
Peter Gabriel was OK, as was Hall and Oates - but nothing there to ever make me want to see them again.
Kiss just showed up and didn't play, as expected.
Now for Springsteen. His set was good: E Street Shuffle, The River, and Kitty's Back.
But the speeches!!
First Bruce spoke for his usual 20 minutes.
Then EACH member spoke for 3-8 minutes EACH:
David Sancious Vini Lopez Damny Federici's son Clarence Clemmon's wife Patti Scialfa Tallent Bittan Lofgren Weinberg Little Steven
I'm sure / hope they are going to cut these out before the show airs on HBO, but they really sucked the air out of the building. Over one hour of speeches.
The next cheer you heard was when Oates said "I bet you are glad there are only two of us."
The energy was regained once Nirvana took the stage, but a lot of people did leave right after Springsteen.
Still a great night for Yusuf - one that bodes well for all of us.

Here is a good one, Christine I think he was sending us up, using the trophy as a mirror! Bawhahahaha! "You're so vain, I bet you think this song is about you, about you!" Well, except that song wasn't about HIM. He did post this picture on his FB page, which shows he's able to laugh at himself. All the fan and press reports are glowing about his RRHF performance, and we can see for ourselves on the videos how great it was. Also, as a lover of useless TRIVIA, I'd like to point out that during the acceptance speech, it was Bill Murray who gave Yusuf HIS glass of water before Yoriyos got there with the bottle of water. I echo Richina in thanking everyone for these posting. AND I'd also like to echo Rolling Stone, "Can Cat Stevens please launch a North American tour tomorrow? His three-song set was a surprise highlight of the Hall of Fame ceremony. The singer-songwriter's voice is preternaturally well-preserved – listening to him sing "Father & Son," "Wild World" and "Peace Train" (the latter with a gospel choir), you could have closed your eyes and thought it was 1971. Many things in his life have changed since then, but those earnestly searching vocals aren't one. Gerald Ford was president the last time Stevens did a proper U.S. tour. It's been long enough."

From The Hollywood Reporter - "Inducting Stevens, who now goes under the name Yusuf Islam, Art Garfunkel scored consistent laughs. "If Paul and I hadn’t split up in 1970, there would have been no room on the charts for Cat Stevens to take over," he declared. Reciting a long list of Stevens’ hit songs, he said, sotto voce, "This guy’s better than Paul." The honoree was equally amusing. "I never thought I’d be on the same stage as KISS, to be honest," he said, before citing his many influences ranging from Beethoven ("The best pop song ever written was the 9th Symphony") to Leadbelly. He lauded the organization for having the courage to honor him despite the fact that "I don’t drink, I don’t smoke and I only sleep with my wife." And he teased the crowd by announcing, "Get ready for my new record. I haven’t stopped, guys, but that’s another story." Looking and sounding terrific at age 65, he thrilled the crowd with gorgeously sung renditions of such classics as "Father and Son" ("I bet you didn’t think you were going to hear that one again”), "Wild World" and "Peace Train" that surely whetted hope for a comeback tour." www.hollywoodreporter.com/review/concert-review-2014-rock-roll-695397

Art's induction speech for Cat Stevens on April 10, 2014
Y'know if Paul and Artie hadn't split up around 1970 there'd be no room on the charts for Cat Stevens to come in and take over. "Bridge Over Troubled Water" had to go away so that "Tea for the Tillerman" could arrive. He owes me a big 'thank you.'
We rockers are raised on a fundamental desire to avoid the 9 to 5, to soar with our instruments beyond the conventional, don't get caught in rush hour, make an end run around the office world. We're rockers.
There's no career without rhythm. You must know how to get the groove to groove, how to make the band swing, just to get in the door. Later comes heart and mind. [sings; "Here comes my baby . ."] After you make 'em move, make 'em think and feel. Delight them with instrumental color, make their hearts skip with a 5/4 bar, a rhythm surprise. [sings: "'Cos out on the edge of darkness, there rides a Peace Train"]. A melodic passage can be a many-splendoured thing. [sings: "Morning has broken ."] And a great guitar lick is a joy forever. [sings: "Oh baby it's a wild world, de de de de de de de de dum"]
"Father and Son," "Peace Train," "Morning Has Broken," "Wild World," "Moon Shadow," "Oh Very Young" -- Cat Stevens created these masterpieces that are very meaningful to most of the people in this room. He put a huge building block in the proud edifice of rock 'n' roll.
I used to go to work to his tapes. We were in Vancouver in '72, Jack Nicholson and I, shooting "Carnal Knowledge" and running lines in the back of the car with "Lady D'Arbanville" playing. It made us feel right. All the girls I took out were Cat Stevens fans; He was a sexy guy - sensitivity with a bass voice. (I shoulda thought of that)
Once, in the late '70s, he was recording in Montreal. He invited me up to throw in a harmony part. Here's how he works: I write a line to his melody. Then he sings a harmony to my line, and asks me to harmonize to his harmony. My final part is all he keeps, against his original melody. This is an elusive cat.
He played with his persona the way he played with chord changes - musicians are, after all, players. For some people, reaching beyond vanity for a higher plane of existence, is particularly difficult - they look so goood. SO it must have been for this bearded Hamlet. The fashion world loved him. But he turned his back on money and world acclaim, he walked away from it all, and moved to Rio.
"Steve, stop playing with the metaphysics and come down for supper." Show business is part of life, but life is life. He sought Awareness as a man- what's really going on, on this spinning ball in space? Well, Syria, the Congo, the Central African Republic have ongoing conflicts killing millions. My friend, Yusuf, developed the sensors to hear the truth.
He is tasked with treading the line between our Cat Stevens and his sense of his own space in the music universe. He will no doubt humbly thank us for putting him in rock's Hall of Fame. But will he think: "What does tonight mean in the Common Good?" It is a festivity, a clinking of glasses. We love him in that he offered to us this fascinating creation of evolving identity.
I was watching a Cat Stevens documentary the other night. In his show there's a sudden slip of the finger on a guitar fret, a little "wrongism." His face lights up with intelligence-- he is bemused, self-critical, wise to the truth that mistakes are often useful, they energize the performer, IF one EMBRACES the moment. I have the distinct honour tonight, to induct into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame this most sincere Seeker, a loving man with an ever-expanding EMBRACE, my friend, the artist we call- CAT STEVENS.www.artgarfunkel.com/catstevens.html

From Rolling Stone: Any hopes of a surprise Kiss performance were dashed when they walked offstage and Art Garfunkel stepped out to induct Cat Stevens, who now goes by the name Yusuf Islam. "If Paul and I hadn't split up around 1970 there'd be no room on the charts for Cat Stevens to take over," he said. "'Bridge Over Troubled Water had to go away so that Tea for the Tillerman could arrive." Cat Stevens gave a long speech where he name-checked everybody from Bach to Bo Diddley to Leonard Bernstein and Bob Dylan, even pausing in the middle to ask for a glass of water. He won the crowd right back when he picked up an acoustic guitar and delivered a flawless "Father and Son." He's 65 years old, but since he's taken decades off from touring and lived a very healthy lifestyle, he sounded absolutely amazing. Paul Shaffer and his band then came out for "Wild World" and a rousing "Peace Train" where they got some help from a large choir. It served as a nice preview for the American tour that Yusuf is supposedly plotting for sometime in the near future. www.rollingstone.com/music/news/nirvana-reunite-kiss-remain-civil-at-rock-and-roll-hall-of-fame-20140411

He's 65 years old, but since he's taken decades off from touring and lived a very healthy lifestyle, he sounded absolutely amazing. It is true that he is one of the very few aging rockers that still can deliver a tune (albeit in a lower key than the original) and still sounds very good. I was watching a special the other night with Judy Collins and I was blown away by her voice! She's a blessed lady to be able to still sing like that at age 74! If anything, her voice has even more richness today. It made me think of Yusuf, when he's not too nervous... and after a couple of warm-up songs.

That performance of Peace Train was absolutely brilliant. Easily the best live performance I have ever seen/heard of that song by Yusuf/Cat. The band and choir/backup singers especially elevated the performance to a new level...so much so that I think Yusuf's own performance was elevated. His vocals were superb. Definitely a highlight; I cannot wait to see it in HD when HBO airs the full ceremony at the end of May.
Thanks to everyone for posting the great photos, videos, articles and first-hand accounts.
With the new album scheduled for release sometime in the Fall, 2014 is shaping up to be another stellar year for Yusuf (and us Cat/Yusuf fans!).
I't's amazing to think that just 10 years ago, no one would have expected Yusuf's re-emergence as a serious recording artist. Yet beginning with his 2004 duet with Ronan Keating, followed by his recording of Indian Ocean, and continuing with the release of THREE new studio albums (2006's An Other Cup, 2009's Roadsinger and 2014's as yet untitled new album) - not to mention the Moonshadow musical AND a world concert tour AND now induction into the RnR Hall of Fame - we have been spoiled as fans. Spoiled. It's astounding, when you think about it.
What's even more astounding is that the recording career of Cat Stevens was relatively short - only 13 years beginning in 1966 and ending in 1979. And now the recording career of Yusuf Islam is approaching that time frame (and hopefully will surpass it!) Who would have thought that?
