I was walking down the main street of my local town (in Australia) the other day and stopped to listen to a couple of young buskers, they would have only been about 13, 14 or 15 but they were playing, (and singing!) Cat's Wild World! I was so impressed with them that I emptied all the change out of my wallet in to their guitar case. They admitted to not being huge fans of Yusuf's, (in reality they new of only three of his songs) but they both love the song wild world. I was so pleased to see other young people connecting with Cat even if on a passive level.
And also, one of my younger sisters (and the school newsletter) inform me that my old primary school apparantly plays 'where do the children play' and 'remember the days of the old school yard' over the load speaker as a substitute for the bell sometimes! how amazing is that! young primary school kids being introduced to the wonder of Cat Stevens. I remember being in Kindergarten and singing 'Morning has Broken' but nothing like this. I believe that we may very well have a new fave of Catism on our hands lol

That's fantastic. I would much rather listen to Cat Stevens than the school bell anytime. Yes, it is great to see so many young people appreciating his music

Can you imagine the kids waltzing into class singing CS songs. Wish I was back at school. This is a great example for other schools to follow suite. I think the land of dowunder is in the awakening of a new CS/YI era. And I don't think this is wishful thinking.

The new season of STAR ACADÉMIE on Québec television started a couple of days ago. (For more on the STAR ACADÉMIE concept, please read below). First chance the candidates get to relax and jam together what do they sing? Not one, not two, not three but four Cat Stevens songs!! They sang "Lady D'Arbanvile", "Father And Son", "Longer Boats" and "Don't Be Shy" with three guitars! And it was beautiful. Apparently, one of the candidates is a huge Cat fan. Which goes to show how much Cat Stevens is popular up here even amongst the new generation. They are all between the age of 18 and 25 and they all play at least one instrument and form a very talented group of young people. So it was a very pleasant surprise. Thought I'd share it with you guys.
On Star Académie: copy / paste from wikipedia:
Star Academy is a highly successful television show format produced by Endemol, that has been broadcast in over 50 countries. It is a pop music talent contest with viewer voting and reality show elements.
There are many versions of the Star Academy show, each country having its own slight variations, but the basic concept remains the same: contestants live in a boarding-school called "The Academy", managed by a director, and various teachers coach them in several artistic disciplines. The participants are filmed with cameras throughout the day and night (an idea borrowed from another of Endemol's major reality shows Big Brother). Once a week, the contestants have to face a prime time show, where they sing the song they've prepared during the week before, as well as recapping their trials and tribulations at The Academy from the past week. The live show will often feature special guest stars, with whom some of the contestants have the opportunity to sing. Based on the judges' verdicts and viewer voting, the weakest contestant is dropped. The eventual winner is awarded a record deal and usually some amount of money. --------------------------------------------------------------

That's fabulous! I would hardly have been able to contain myself if I had seen that on TV! Very cool that he is still popular with the younger generation, albeit in small bites. Hey, I'll take it! I am trying to get my 19 year-old niece to catch the Cat bug. It's not quite taking yet, but I'm not giving up!
Thanks for this, Glaucus and Mike - just fabulous!

2night on the TCM station aired and old favorite, “Harold and Maude.” Even thought I own several copies of this masterpiece, I still enjoy waiting for the start of the movie on TV… I believe the anticipation adds to the excitement and enjoyment. The commentary at the end said this movie was added to the list of the top 100 comedies of all time… Not bad for a box office flop originally…

I don't know if this was mentioned elsewhere - in case it wasn't, there's a small article about Cat/Yusuf in the newest issue (March/April 2009) of AARP magazine.

I was shopping at Woolworths yesterday afternoon when Cat Stevens singing Another Saturday Night came thru the loudspeakers. It certainly made my shopping trip much more pleasant.

Woo Hoo! Finally found the Majikat Tour Book from 1976. Been looking for it for like 6 months and the only one I saw was a dealer on ebay who wanted $179 !!! Well, it finally showed up on ebay from someone else.... and nobody else bid on it but me! I really can't believe nobody else in the world of ebay was looking for this extremely ultra-rare tourbook! I got it for.... drum roll please.... $20! Happy happy!

Well YI/CS fever has finally hit Australia again. ;D Thankyou both for the news. I was about to ring my brother in Melbourne, and ask him to keep the newspaper and send me a copy af the article, but I forgot the magic of the internet being able to connect with just about everything you can imagine. On the other hand, it still would be nice to have a copy of the original article, I hope I can get him in time before he throws the newspaper out.

This is from the Belgian radio a review of Yusuf Roadsinger and very positive that is the first tim in years they are so positive here in Belgium about Yusuf ,this can't go wrong so i hope one of other concert manager ask Yusuf hear in Belgium to perform that would be so great and why not Yoriyos can start the evening so dream on Regine dream on Cat Stevens heeft een nieuwe plaat, Roadsinger. Pardon, Yusuf. In 1977 al bekeerde hij zich tot de islam en sindsdien heeft hij de naam Yusuf Islam. Daar blijft nu alleen Yusuf van over, maar dat doet weinig ter zake. Want eigenlijk blijft iedereen toch Cat Stevens zeggen. Een stickertje op de nieuwe zegt zelfs: the man previously known as Cat Stevens. (jsp) This is a review of Yusuf's Roadsinger on Radio one of yesterdayevening ,they loved it but ofcause they found a few numbers to much preaching but at last they found Cat back so this evening they turned thinkabout you again.HEAR IS THE REVIEW www.radio1.be/programmas/exit/yusuf-straatzangerThrough a translator... Cat Stevens has a new plate, roadsinger. I beg your pardon, Yusuf. In 1977, he is already repentant Islam, and since then, he has named Yusuf Islam. It is now only Yusuf of about, but that does little to the point. In fact, however, because everyone Cat Stevens. A stickertje on the new even says: the man previously known as Cat Stevens. Do all 30 - year effort to your new name. It seems to have a time ago that the man was still a plate, but that is not correct. But the last three years ago, but this is indeed a hole of almost 30 years. It is, therefore, but his 2nd in his career, 2nd is the man (61). And he sounds as if there are all these years, nothing has happened. Of course, with the very specific voice of the man: you can recognize him as Cat Stevens, i apologise for Yusuf. It also has to do with the songs themselves, and we are aware of how to use the word of the songs. Good old-fashioned songs - singersong (if that's no superfluous), the classic – there is nothing error. On the contrary, they are very well put together, with beautiful arrangements, fine strijkers and even buyers. He is not the whole of the plate is full, because after 4 - 5 strong numbers will there be a dipje. That also has to do with the message in the numbers: world of darkness, and o ’ be what you must the Muslim to give the floor, the world, the improver prediker, the message, and because there are too thick opligt, the disruptive. Not that the other numbers, no message, but there is much more sophisticated, much less intrusive, so that it hardly stands out. And the undeniable qualities than above: the still beautiful voice, and the beautiful acoustic onderlagen arrangements. If numbers are Indies Lady d’arbanville, morning has broken or wild wind, there are not strong enough, but numbers from a solid plate. The artwork of the CD shows something else: Cat Stevens is and remains an old Hippie movement. The central image is a few years, VW ’ 60 busje, with a number plate cat 60s. The VW emblem lead has been replaced by the peace sign (a long time ago that we still liked), on the flank is a portrait of the young Cat Stevens, painted and are lagging behind the old songtitels peace train and Moonshadow. More than sufficient credentials to be a shortfall of time. Clear foto’s of the man in not: a few obscure Claire in gehulde attitudes show a gray bearded man with long brown coat, and guitar. No more. As if the person is not so important, what is even more emphasis on the music. As it should be. I was in Barnes & Noble this morning and as I was browsing the shelves, all of a sudden I heard "Saw a sign on the path, all seekers this way..." I was so happy to hear it being played in public! The entire CD was played as I shopped. When I was paying for my books I asked who decides what music is played in the store, and I was told the music dept usually picks, and told me that if I liked it, I should let them know so it can be a "Customer Recommends." So I went to the music area to let them know what a fine choice they made. The young man behind the counter said that he could show me what it was if I liked it. I was THRILLED to tell him that I am actually flying to London to see Yusuf, but just wanted to let him know how great it was to hear it being played in the store. He said they actually play the CD all the time in that store. What a great way to start my day!

Wow a similiar thing happened to me in a store called "the rock factory" the other day... I was just wondering around looking at a few CDs and having a look at how much profile Roadsinger had in the store and how they were promoting it, when I heard "Saw a sign on the path, all seekers this way" they then played the whole CD really loudly! I mean I was in there with a friend and we could barely hear eachother speak. It was wonderful. The store was extremely busy that day so many people would have heard it!

Well it's finally happening. The Road Singer has come to town, and the people are listening, and welcoming him home, so The Road Singer has decided to stay around a little longer.

I caught the tail end of an interview with André Perry last night on "Radio Boomer 1570 AM" in Montreal. André Perry was the co-founder and owner of "Le Studio" in Morin Heights, Québec, where Cat recorded and worked on his last three albums of the 70s - see this thread: majicat.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=catstevens&thread=1622&page=1Just as I turned on the radio, Perry was reminiscing about Cat Stevens and the glory days of "Le Studio". He said the quiet setting of the place, the hospitality and the respect for privacy quebecers are known for when it comes to celebrity, made it possible to record there without the hassle of the media. When Steve was there, Perry organized a sort of a press meeting at the end of Steve's two months stay and everyone respected that. There is a great article about that press meeting for "Numbers" on Majicat. I'll post the link when the site is back. Anyway, nice to hear those 70s stories from someone who was instrumental for Steve's last three albums. P.S. Perry was invited to the radio show because it is the 40th anniversary of John and Yoko's bed-in at the Queen Elizabeth hotel in Montreal. Perry is the one who recorded "Give Peace A Chance". Also, the radio host asked Perry if he had considered writing his autobiography. Perry replied: no, because it would kill the myth! (Too bad)
