Yeah, it's a pretty cool site. On some of his songs he has a young Graham Nash quality to his voice. Does anyone here have the CD?

I have Yoriyos' CD, too--it's beautiful!
I am especially fond of "Hurricane John", though all of the songs are really good. Take a look at the CD credits for Yusuf's name--he helped his son here and there....

I know this will be a stupid question, BUT... Yoriyos = Mohammed?? I take it Yoriyos is Mohammed's "Cat Stevens' name", so to speak?
The resemblance between them is uncanny! And it's nice to see that he's following in his father's footsteps, albeit down his own path. He seems to possess the same soul of a poet that his father had, too.
Very creative website he has!

Hi Jancat! It's so clear isn't it -- Yoriyos. He explained on his website once that Yoriyos is basically the Greek spelling (or transliteration) of Georgiou. Isn't that cool??? And what's even cooler is that Yoriyos basically means farmer (I believe).... so it's all full circle back to Tillerman... (someone correct me if I'm wrong about farmer... but that was the basic gist I got was that it had something to do with the earth... and tilling....) Could be why Cat (Steve, ha ha) used the "Tillerman" moniker in the first place... ?? as a sort of alias .. or alter ego perhaps?

Well good luck to Mohammed in his musical career. Is he open publically about who he is, who his father is? Well probably not something that could be kept secret anyway right.

While it's no secret who his father is, I've heard that Mohammed is adamant about "making it" on his own talent - I heard he even insisted that his CD not be displayed next to Yusuf's CDs in music stores. I think this is quite admirable. I wish him the best. ~Sun~

Maybe there's more than one meaning, but I always thought that the tillerman was the guy who controlled the tiller of a boat, and therefore steered it. Of course, the boat's tiller plows through the water, much like a plow plows through the dirt . . . BTW, I love the explanation for Yoriyos, Lucy. Thanks! ~Sun~

Yoriyos did say once that the name was his Grandfathers. Thant was my fathers name as well. Does that mean you could be related to Yusuf? And is Yoriyos written with Greek letters in Greek, or do the Greeks use Latin letters (abc's) nowadays, so it would actually be "Yoriyos" in modern Greek? (I hope I am making sense here!) ~Sun~

I sure could be related to Yusuf, his Father was a Greek Cypriot like me and most of us Cypriot are related to each other. Yoriyos in English is George. This is written in English not Greek. I can speak Greek but can not write.

For someone who doesn't want the association to his father he sure is channeling Cat Stevens. Fringes, bracelets, knee high leather boots and all, it is so obvious (lol). I can understand him wanting to to make it on his own but hey even Cat Stevens brought reporters home to meet his parents. I guess I am wondering if he doesn't want the connection to islam (?) Is there any mention of it in his work? (I cannot hear sound on my computer so have no idea what he was saying!)

To quote him -- "My name is Greek. though i spell it my own way. Yoriyos or Yorgos means - Earth worker, farmer"--
Not sure where he stands with Islam, he does not make a point of it publicly at least not that I have seen... he has been greatly influenced by Native American beliefs... but he also did a cover of the song The End on his album which Yusuf wrote and recorded for An Other Cup ...
I have listen to Yoriyos "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" so many times I have lost count... it has the same magical quality of drawing one out to seek for deeper truth that some of my favorite Cat Steven's songs do... but to me they have an entirely different musical feel... God has twice blessed us with these related musical poets ... and I am truly grateful for the hopeful inspiration that they have and continue to bring to the world...
Peace, love and respect to you all, today and always, Lil

I think "Cat Stevens" opened the door for "Yoriyos," and re-opened the door for "Yusuf." What I mean by that, is that few "westerners" would listen to Yusuf or Yoriyos if they weren't associated with Cat Stevens.
Both father and son now face the same challenge - to produce breakthrough albums on the level of Tea for the Tillerman, with brand new songs that resonate with the public and have a chance of becoming hits - songs like Wild World, Peace Train, Father and Son, and Moonshadow. If they can produce songs like these, then they will be totally respected and their voices will be heard and in great demand. Also, they can produce great "secular" albums with no, or only slight, Islamic overtones -- sometimes people will listen better to a whisper than a shout.
In other words, if Yusuf and Yoriyos want the general public to listen to their songs, they both need to continue to pursue true excellence and to resonate with the wavelength of their audience; and they both will have to "make it" on their own, present-day, talent. Neither can rest on the laurels of Cat Stevens.
BTW, they are certainly smart enough and savvy enough to know all this, but I'm saying it here because this is how I interpret Yoriyos's desire to "make it on his own."
What are your thoughts?
~Sun~
